Humming noise when turning left

  Oyster Card
I've got a MK1 Phase 2 with Power steering,
Everytime I turn the steering ever so slightly to the left I get a horrible hmmmmmmmmmm sound, really hard to describe it, mostly does it when your doing over 30.
Turning right is fine so is going straight, I've noticed the rear lhs tyre is bald around the outter edge as well.

Its definatly your wheel bearings m8y, i had the same problem.
I advise getting it fixed sharpish as driving your car in its condition will cause the bearings to heat up so much it'll weld its self to the drive shaft and can be a pain in the arse to get off,
Hope you get it sorted

Cheers lads could be a lot worse, o0thinks power steering pump 0o
Any idea how much a local garage going at say £20 p/h labour would charge to do wheel bearings?

At a garage it cost me £70 to get my bearings done mate - the bearings themselves were about £25 of that (i.e. £45 labour.)

If you were able to take the hub off yourself you could just take that to the garage and they should press in new bearings for you for about £5 and you can get bearings on the net for £20 so your looking at roughly £25 if you do most of the work yourself or £70 if you take it to a garage.

Any idea how I can tell which bearing needs replacing? Like I said it only does it when I turm the steering wheel left at any amount would imagine front left?

If you can jack the car up one wheel at a time then it should be easy to tell. Chack every wheel for play in the wheel. What I mean by that is - hold the wheel at 6 o'clock and 12 o'clock and try to rock the wheel back and forth. If there is any sort of movement whatsoever then something isn't right and whichever wheel does this will be the one with the knackered bearing.
