Hurrah, my piece of **** 182 has a new rattle

I only seem to get this in 3rd or 4th when accelerating. It doesn't make the noise whilst stationary and it only seems to be audible when the windows are closed.

It isn't the ECU bracket as that is secure. I've banged on the centre section and cat and can't hear any obvious rattles in there. But it is quite a metallic rattle, like I had a couple of stones in a tin can.

The noise can be heard in the first 15 seconds of this video (you may as well ignore the rest of it)

I forgot to mention, it's much louder than the video suggests, and it sounds like it is coming from directly below me and to the left slightly.

The only thing i could think of is the heatshields but if you've knocked the exhausts and it doesnt do it then god knows :S

Might be a long shot, get someone to rev it and push down on the alternator mine had a metal noise for ages after many months i decided to strip the front of my car down to find a bolt had dropped out causing it to virbate.

Where can I find the alternator and what does it look like? I forgot to mention that my knowledge of cars is non existent.

The noise doesn't happen when stationary though so I'm not sure that will help.

Well if you can get someone to run along side your car while driving push down on it

Havnt you had a engine put in by jms? if so contact them see if they can help if its coming from the engine bay

Yeah I guess I should take it to my local garage. I owe them £50 anyway so I'll go and pay them and get them to check it at the same time.

Endless problems with this car. I wish I had never bought it.

Tell me about it dude, feel sorry for you but every car has problems just yours was an engine lol. When i got mine i felt i was spending endless money on replacing worn out parts but makes up for it when you show up some expensive cars.

im feeling this pain at the moment, seems to be 1 thing after another at the moment.
hardly spent a penny on my 10 year old phase 1 after owning it 3 years

Could it be exhaust baffles? (These are in the back boxes, right?), or could something wrong with the Cat itself cause a noise like this?

I have this similar noise too, no idea where it is coming from though.
When stationary, if you put it into any of the gears (with clutch still pressed in obviously) does it make a vibration noise?

But on the question of is it the exhaust baffles, i dont think it would be, as it would be heard in all of the gears, plus you'd hear it more with window down.

Try banging on the back boxes, if you hear something rattling, its the baffles - can then rule them out.

I've listened a bit more today and it is present in all gears, but is most obvious now in 2nd and 3rd.

New to the mix is a loud metallic buzzing at 4k revs, stationary or moving. The other noise in the video is only present when moving.

I think my whole exhaust system is screwed to be honest

if you've just had the engine replaced do you think its possible that the garage have dropped some washers or nuts in the chassis and forgot about them? start on the cheepest things first.

I undid the plastic tray thing under the engine bay and nothing had fallen down onto that, but I guess there is a possibility things have fallen elsewhere. Not sure where to look though.

Holy crap, I think you;re right. I should have mentioned this yesterday. But I went under the car and that black bar was loose, so I could move it with my hand. I assumed because it is gear related it should have some movement to it.

Also, when I undid that plastic tray under the car there was that rubber squishy thing which looked like it was sitting loose.

The clutch was changed recently so maybe it is this. Do I need to get it to a garage to fix it, and is it dangerous to drive as it is?

Oh balls, so this is something that I'll have to pay to fix rather than just get a garage to tighten something up?

Could it have been caused when JMS replaced my clutch as I remember James mentioning something about the gear linkage being reconnected, or something like that. I might give them a call.

Give james a call if you have his number and ask. Either that or PM f0xy (he'll hate me with all the PM's he gets) btu he was talking to me at FCS about adjusting gear linkages, so he'll know how it should be.

Wait and see what someone else says. We could be completely wrong. Im guessing it should be able to move, seen as the gear selector is meant to be able to move, but unsure on how freely it should be able to move.

Nick, thats linked to the gear selector ( moves when you change gear ) Get some one to sit in the car & change gear & you'll see it move back & forth

Yes, it selects the gears Nick! If you sit in the car and wobble the gear stick side to side in neutral the rod you are referring to also moves side to side.

If you get under the car and push it back and forth you will also feel it select the gears.

my loud metallic buzzing at 4,000 was my alpine head unit cage! ida x305? mines and x100, take the stereo out and go for a drive, if you find its that just dampen the cage before putting the unit back in.

Hi there I've had this problem when I bought my 02 172 it was rattling at around 4k plus and was annoying me to no end till I actually popped the hood and had a look .all I did was get 2 big screw drivers and put them down behind the motor where the extractors are and spread the heatsheild away from the extactors towards the firewall and the major rattle was gone and I could get on with enjoying the sounds of that little motor peaking at 7200rpm.however I still have a slight rattle witch I think is the cat inernals but it's breable hope this helps

Its French. Did no one tell you about their 'character'

Rattles are good, its when they go silent (whatever that was rattling has fallen off) that its bad ... just turn the radio up. Fixes most noises tbh.

I listened intently all the way home, and the noise was present but seemed better.

As I pulled into my drive I noticed that I could still hear a noise from outside the car. Now I have no idea if this is THE noise, or a new one, however I have a video of it. When stationary it didn't seem to increase with revs, but when moving (if it is the same noise) it is louder when going faster.

It is coming from the engine itself. I've put pressure in various places to see if the engine cover was rattling but it wasn't that.

If this engine breaks as well, I am going to kill someone.

Might need the sound up a bit. It's that tapping noise in the background.
