what will this tell me? if it shakes does it mean new ones? help....please!
If they rattle or have give you need new ones as most likly the rubber gailers at the end will have cracked and the grease will have leaked out so the metal to metal has litrally been wearing away.
If so new shafts from halford etc arn't to much or £15 for new gaiters from Renault. However new rubber gaiters are a pain to try and fit.
If the shafts have no give it could be the box or something catching on the wheel etc.

what do you mean by "the box"? iv just been out in the pourin rain and did some tests;

1. check wheel is boltted on tight = yes, all ok
2. check rubber gaiter = yes, seems to be all ok
3. check shaft for movement = if i push/pull it st8 it moves about 1mm (and makes slight tonk). if i push/pull it from side 2 side, up n down it dont move at all.
4. check roll pin on sun wheel = the selent i put on about 6 days ago has come off, the roll pin is still in the hole, but its hard to see if it ok.

i also span the wheel while it was in the air (other side on the ground) and could hear a slight click/knock (not very load at all tho)

any ideas?

Try a large screwdriver or prybar under the bottom of the hub but above the bottom arm, as close to the ball joint as possible, and pull down, if it comes down a long way, probably your ball joint making the noise.

When its jacked up, try working the wheel slightly side to side and top to bottom, that'll give you a few more clues but sounds like Ball joint or wheel bearing to me.

new ball joints, so not them....wheel bearing makes a different sound. this is a real clunking/tonking.

just so people know ho was reading this thread, and for future ref;

i took apart the left hand drive today, and found the problem! it turned out to be the inner cv type joint, the one that fits into the dif on the gearbox. what happened was the white plastic ring thats ment to be positioned in a grove in the rubber gaiter had come out. i think this made the seal between the gearbox and driveshaft leak oil (the gearbos was half empty, was full when i put it in). so i put the white ring back into its place, and put it all bk again.....noise gone! lets hope it stays that way!

and as if you wouldnt have guessed, while taking it for a test drive, guess what? the engine cut out! and wouldnt start again (turned over but on spark!) turned out to be the immobaliser. i took key out/put it back in and it worked 3rd time. lets hope that dosnt happen again!

laterz
