PMSL - Is there any difference???

Having owned a 1.2 clio as my first car I can assure you that you will not be dissapointed when you drive a 182! You know that pedal on the far right - it actually does something!

Well, don't get your expectations *too* high. It's rapid if you drive it hard, but the acceleration isn't what I'd call neck snapping!

Well it really depends what your used to, with it being a 16v engine its never going to have that low down grunt and the power will be found further up the rev range, but if you've only ever driven a 1.2 or lower and you haven't much experience of fast cars then it will feel that much better.

I have driven faster cars than my cup and I used to own a car that could quite literaly throw you back into your seat and if I didn't have bills and a mortagage to pay I would still have a car like that now.

So when I got into the 172 the acceleration didn't feel like much at all compared to what I was used to, I knew it was quite quick and very agile but it didn't feel that special in the 0-60 department (which is why I'm looking at some serious engine mods).

However if I cast my mind back to the day I took my old 205 GTI for a test drive after owning a 1.3 Astra as my first car I remember the feeling of being thrown back in my seat and feeling like I was driving something really rapid.

My Cup has that car beat by over a second 0-60 yet it felt so much faster at the time because of what I had been driving exclusivley for the first 3 years of my driving life.

So I guess I what I am saying is YES you will feel the difference;)

Imagine being on the top of a tower block & having to run down all those stairs to get to the bottom (1.2).
Now imagine how much faster jumping off the top would be,to reach the bottom (182)

If you get my drift, light years apart!!!!!!!!

1.2 is book speed of like 13 or so seconds to 60, the 182 is book speed of 7 but typically can be a fair bit under that. So just on those figures which are typically pretty usless is there much of a difference. well yes lol.

Also remember the 182 handles better.

And at your age in a year hope you got a bank loan to insure one mate unless your on parents policy in which case still be a fair bit.

  No more clio's for me!
I had a 1.2 16v dynam, now i've got a mk2 51 plate 172 and my neck muscles are still getting used to the difference in acceleration. ;)

  megane coupe F7R
Not much difference between the two really. The might handle better but lose out on acceleration slightly lol

  MY04 Scooby STi
went from a 1.2 extreme to 18e and all my mates put money down that I would have points on my licence by christmas

I drove a 1.2 when i went on holiday and OH MY GOD how fast was that..........not very, yeah the RS clios are a leap over the base models.

I had a clio 1.2 8v RN, went for a test drive in a 182 (when I was 20) and it just blew my mind!!!! as a package acceleration/handing/equipment etc unreal!

After the test drive I had to wait 10 months before I turned 21 to get behind the wheel of my own 182!

Book a test drive today!

Im picking my 182 up on tuesday and am going from a saxo vtr, im worried that i wont really notice a mind blowing difference, like i did when i bought my vtr after going from a 1 litre nissan micra which 0-60 took about 2 hours!

You will notice some increase but wont be as mind blowing as from a 1 litre micra to a vtr. Hell jumping in a 1.2 16v clio from a 1 litre micra was just pure pleasure after i got stuck driving one for a week. Hated the damn thing had no power what so ever and i thought the clio was powerless.

  BMW E46 330i Touring
I've gone from a 1.6 Fiesta (similar spec to VTR) and I've certainly noticed the difference, so you should be fine. :) As well as being quicker, everything's also just a lot more fun.

Tell me about it, i hated the micra too, was a luxury when i got to drive a 1.2 fiesta for a week as a courtesy car, i didn't want to give it back!!

I went from 1.2 16v to Renaultsport Clio 182. I promised myself I'd run it in as per manufacturer's instructions. I drove outta the dealer and put my foot down on a B road and never looked back. Hit 5k and whoomph. I like that!

I too went from a 1.2RL clio to a 172, and wow did it seem quick. Seemed to take me ages to get used to the power (the 1.2 Clio was my first car) and it still makes me smile when I drive it.
What you need to do once you've gotten used to your 172/182 is not drive it for a week or so, or drive something smaller and then go back, and it reminds you just how fast it is :)

But i can tell you something thats just as fun...ok its just as fun if your in the i wanna go kill myself mood. A chevy tacuma 60mph B roads and me not thinking about it after coming out of the clio it doesnt handle like a clio. 60mph into a sharpish bend. Lets just say the language that came out of my mouth at this point was rather colourful i swear the damn thing felt like it was about to flip over and it just wasnt going round the corner until the last minute. had there been someone on the otherside of the road deffinately wouldnt have ended in a good way the car just went sliding.

lol, I think we all agree that you'll notice a bit of extra poke ;)

I traded 'down' in power stakes, from 321bhp in my M Roadster, to a mere 182, but it still doesn't feel "slow". They're so light and full of beans, its difficult not to be impressed!

  Focus ST-2
Deb182 i had a vtr before my 182. and you will notice the difference, specially at 5,000 kick!!! can't get enough of it! Plus it will not feel like driving a tin can anymore lol

I went from a 1.4 bravo to a 172, I remember wondering how it could be legal for a car to be so fast lol, feck knows what a ferrari F40 must feel like

whent from a 1.0l auto fiesta mk3 to a 172, now, that was some difference!

i could actually go round corner fast, and the hardest thing is trying not to hit the limiter in 1st and 2nd!

  Cupra
I went from a 1.4 civic to a 172. MY girlfriend pissed herself laughing when I first put my foot down off some lights...... Apparently I had never looked so serious, but the difference in speed at take off was a bit of a shock!!! :D

  tiTTy & SV650
went from a 1.6 205gti 115bhp 0-60 in 8.5 secs and fook me the 182 is soooo much quicker off the mark. And I go into bends in the 182 about 10-15mph faster than in the pug.

One of the things I notice with my 182, is that whenever I join a motorway or dually from a slip road, everyone is going too slow! You can easily be doing 100+ by the time you join the motorway - if you're not careful of course ;)

I came from a cinquecento to the 182. The best advice I can give is this:

Closing speed is the thing to be aware of. Bends, junctions, other cars will arrive at your front bumper alarmingly faster than you are currently used to. Your brain will still think 50mph, but your speedo will be at 90.

Also, PEOPLE WILL PULL OUT ON YOU!!!! Whether its a junction or a motorway, they'll see 'just a Clio' and slice you up regularly.

These scenarios create severe sphincter spasms.

  Mondeo STTDCI
SOOO true about people pulling out on you! They dont realise that its a nippy version and suddenly you're on the brakes.

Also true about motorway slips when joining you have to watch your speed. But it is very useful to have the power to join when its heavy traffic.

Thanks Aberclio182, good to hear opinions on the differences from a previous vtr owner! Can't wait to feel this 5,000 kick which everyone keeps talking about!!

lol im pretty convinced now. better get saving for that insurance!!

If your getting it on your own policy you really need to start saving. Im 22 put down various bits and pieces still couldnt get it under £3900 a year thats with my NCB etc. Although my postcode is a big issue.

Slightly off topic but:

Wozzaa im also 22 and have got and 3 years no claims (oh and 6 points!) and i'm paying £1000 pounds a year. Even if your postcode is an issue, it cant be that bad!
