I think my engines about to go :( problem solving

  1.8 8v RSi
1st problem about3-4 months ago was when i was crawling around town in traffic, the car seems to jolt when gently accelerating or acting like tis just run out of petrol and loose power but not stall. then it suddenly kicks back up again.
2nd problem is a horrible squiling/whinning noise(not a slipping belt sound) garage thinks it could be a bearing getting redy to go on the cambelt/aux belt.
its since been to the garage to have a fuel filter changed to see if it stops the jolting/power loss...gues what, it didnt work. it also had to broke bolts removed from hub and tracking done.
since it's been back the exhaust seems quieter and when i accelerate any ammount theres this horrible hissing sound PLUS the car feels as slow as my old RT although i know its not....the hard i press the accelerator the louder it gets. i open my windows and can hear it nicely.(sounds like the noise u get when ur inflating ur tyres) the squealing noise seems to have quietened down a bit since this hissing sounds appeared a couple of days ago.
some please help me and the garage. (starting to wonder if they're making things wrong with my car on purpose)
cheers
Si

temp is normal according to dash, never noticed any blue smoke coming out my exhaust EVER!, and not as far as im aware....whatever that is

How new is the exhaust? still got a cat on there? by what your describing it sounds like the exhaust is blocked(hissing)

If a bearing is getting ready to let go i'd change it NOW! as it it lets go it'll take the belt with it and destroy the top end.

its a custom powerflow one about 8-10 months old i think still has cat. and its booked in to get it done...but my garage bill so far is £200 and he recons it will b £500 by the time he's changed bareing/cam belt. so im wondering if it will be cheaper just to whack a replacement engine in with lower mileage.

I said to my younger brother that he ought to think about getting his cambelt done as his mk2 ph2 is coming up to 5yrs old, he said he did it a couple of weeks ago himself and it was a piece of piss
£200 tops at a garage.

i new my garage over charged a lil every now n again but im on very good terms with the owner lol....seems like even i'm gettin over charged lol.

I paid £300 for cambelt and waterpump on my 1.2 16v, it was going to be £200 for just the cambelt but I got the waterpump done as well as it was showing signs of leaking.

Just a thought,

If its losing power, hissing and stalling on occasion it sounds to me like youve got a problem with the engine drawing in air downstream of the throttle valve.

Check for leaks by spraying some WD40 or brake cleaner (carefully) around any gaskets on the inlet manifold - if its sucking in air then it'l suck in the WD40 and the engine note will change.

hope this helps,

Kev

for a length of time unknown to me the air pipe connecting to the throttle body was split and suckin unfiltered air in threw a 1 inch long 3mm wide gap from over tightening of the clip on the throttle body. leaving a load of c**p round the edge of the throttle body... im assuming now that this is what is upsetting the engine althought the pipe was replaced about a month ago
