  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

Only buy a 993 with a good warranty or a decent bank balance in reserve.

If it breaks itll cost your arms, legs and anything else you may have.

Cost of ownership (due to residuals) outside breakage is OK (unless you do miles) - get a later Boxter S and take the top off is a more sensible solution but who said any of this was sensible.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

and before everyone gets tarty about the Boxter S not being a real Porsche, go drive, the engines in the middle and the handling is sublime.

Did I here you mention arms & legs Mike...............what can I say thats what Ive been trying to get over to them thoughout this thread..............you cant run a Porsche on shoestring..................fact...................precautions like warranties are an absolute MUSt HAVE for most who run them ;)

This is getting silly.

F me. I can afford to run the porsche. Thats the whole point.

Why are peoples noses put out of joint by the fact I want to run a porsche and know I couldve done it easily on the money my v6 clio has cost me. If you dont want to or cant afford to run whatever car I dont care.

This is quite strange. You can run a porsche for similar money as a family car and definately for the same running costs of a v6. Yes if it goes bang it is usually expensive (top end engine rebuild is around £5-8k) but bear in mind if your clio v6 goes bang outside of warranty its still gonna sting your wallet.

Do you think Im incredibly stupid (tempting to respond I know) or something? Do you think Im going to buy one from Arthur Daley? Im also happy I can finance it if there is a problem further down the line.

This was never supposed to be abusive about the clio. Why do people on these forums feel they have to fight for the honour of their cars all the time. If I had said it was cr*p it would still only be my opinion and at the end of the day who gives a flying f.

I have run my clio for 3+ years and I think its a great car. My wife loves driving the thing too. They are FING fantastic cars in my view.

Given that most people contributing to this link are not working from knowledge that has been obtained from actually running a porsche its just turning into a load of nonsense. I know how much it costs. ;)

MikeT. Boxsters are truly fantastic in handling department but I dont want a soft-top and if youre gonna fit a hard top (in case anyone suggests it) you may as well buy a coupe to start with IMHO.

So there you have it. Handbags at dawn anyone? Mines the Luis Vuitton. Challenger gets a Gucci!

ps can you pass me my toys back up to my pram?

Well written and well said Chris................but this was never about weather YOU can or cant afford a Porsche...............no it has turned into a general question about the the costs of running a Porsche when compared to a V6.............and in my opinion there is NO comparison...................things do go wrong with cars mine, yours..................things go wrong and as you have implied and Mike has said youre talking arms & legs!

By the way I was onthe Porsche forum tonight and they ALL realise that some form of warranty is an absolute must and others are.......one woman in particular is terified of the costs!

Me I run my Vee on my own not as some would have it ie subsidised by my dad.................no me I run it and I also know what it costs...................Im the only one that has come up with hard facts to back up what they are saying ie costs.............which I uploaded in my pics section ages ago for others who wanted to know...................I still do not accept that a Porsche can be run, serviced and repaired for the same as it would cost to run a Vee.........theres a lot to be said for "paying for the name" and that I recon is what happens as far as the likes of Porsche etc are concerned and that is one reason why these type of cars are not for most certainly not for a 20 year old :D

I HAVE my dream car.................sl*g off the Vee if you want it doesnt bother me...........I love it..........but accept that its personal choice ;)

Bottom line you might like to SAY a Porsche costs the same to run as a Vee or not much more than a family car..............but I think you, me, we all know that it cant ;)

I was really enjoying this discussion until I was made out to be some sort mindless cookie eating child.............which take it as read I didnt like eh

Take it eas..........handbag at the ready (y)

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

I dont have a handbag and am somewhat surprised at the ammount of you that do! Maybe theres some club I should know about????

If you can afford to run a 993 you can afford the payments to support an extended finance deal on a 996 - much better reliability and residuals. Better car, better interior, water cooled, cheaper overall (whole life cost) with better warranty cover from Porsche.

C4S, you know you want to, I use one weekly and its awesome

Now where do you buy handbags.

Do I need stiletos, I always feel so short without in those bars

Yep. All got a bit ridiculous.

The last thing Ill say on this (promise). Everyone is basing their argument on the fact that things are going to go wrong with the porsche(Im not saying they wont). My whole argument/point from the start has been(if you go through the thread, i think its one of my first statements) you can run a porsche for the same money as a family car provided it DOESNT go bang and if it does go bang the money I save on depreciation would pay for the repairs.

Spares on older porsches arent that bank busting. Official Porsche Service centres even do special rates of labour (upto 50% reduction in some places) and there are loads of independent specialists that are cheaper still.

I have lost over £10k since buying my v6 new. That, as I have mentioned, would cover a engine rebuild. As long as, like any performance car, you buy one that has a full service history and has been well maintained there is no reason that it should go bang. Porsches will easily do over 200k if the correct servicing regimen is adhered to. I have run a porsche before and it cost me less than my v6 overall. Thats why I got the servicing costs wrong. They have decreased since last time I had one.

As for people that have porsches and are terrified that they cant afford them if they go wrong. Theyve bought the wrong car havent they? Why have a performance car that youre terrified is going to bankrupt you at any time but that, as they say, is a whole different argument........................

Im not twenty. I wasnt suggesting that a 911/993 is a good choice for a twenty year old but then again not many people would say a v6 is either (in fact loads of my mates/colleagues will think you are one lucky guy).

We will just have to disagree I think.

I dont agree with insults on forum posts. After all we are all just expressing our opinions and sometimes people have to accept that either they are wrong or that the other person isnt going to accept their point of view. Calling them names doesnt do anything to change that.

Hope you enjoy the v6 for many years to come Stu.

MikeT.

Air cooled all the way for me.

Im not a fan of the 996. IMHO porsche have got dragged into the same trap that all the car manufacturers have, too fat, too heavy and more over too ugly! However it is a without doubt a fantastic car. 993 is prettier (IMO) and is holding its value better than the 996 which is dropping cash all over since the 997 was released. I think the best looking porsche are the first 60s porsches. However, I would not like to have one as my daily drive and handling in the wet and twisty is not the best.

It comes down to dream cars. 993 911 is one of my dream cars. So was the v6. I couldnt quite afford one when I got the v6 (buying it would have cleared out my bank balance leaving my with f all to run it lol!) but can now.

That just leaves Audi RS6+, Ferrari F355 Berlinetta and Aston DB9 before I die and I doubt Ill ever own any of those.
ps (and this is not supposed to be a boast) I dont do finance unless its a mortgage on a house.

Thats cool guys were all happy bunnies again

Appoligies if I have offended anyone ;)

My last word is by way of an observation.................I was thinking last night I work at a Michelin tyre plant which employs over 1000 people and there isnt even one Porsche not a single one to be found in the car park............just an observation.

And Chris assuming its a Mk2...................when you come to think about selling it I might be interested :D..................cause for me the only car to be seen in at the age of 20 is the Clio V6.................that car is ogled by all weather they drive a Porsche, Evo, Scooby, TT, RS Focus............even Ferrari (y)
