Immobiliser issue questions

I have got the common problem of an intermittent immobiliser fault, where occasionally when turning the ignition on I get the flashing red light.

Often after a few attempts it goes, although recently I have had to hold the button on the key firmly while turning the ignition on to get the car started.

Does this mean it's a key fault, or is holding the button in somehow bypassing the immobiliser? I've looked inside the key and the circuit board looks fine.

Also if the key was to fail completely, is there any other way to get started? I know on some cars you can put in a code by turning the ignition on and off.

if it's a flashing red light there is a problem with the key or decoder ring around the key barrel. Have you tried the spare key? If not and the key does fail you will have to get a key from renault which is about £150 coded roughly.

It could be a few things at fault really... you're never going to know without getting it looked at by someone with CLIP diagnostics though. Some other bits of kit can see the UCH but vary in ability/live data so its hit and miss hence always best you go to someone with dealer level kit that can see everything if possible.

Assumping it is the UCH at fault of course... if its wiring related it won't fix it which is why its best you get it properly diagnosed first (Just my opinion but gamble if you like).

No spare key unfortunately, and according to the receipts this key was bought from Renault in 2008.

It's got to the point now where it ONLY starts if you hold the button on the key in when turning the ignition - surely that points to a key fault? Unless when pressing the button there's an emergancy immobiliser bypass built in which I can't find any evidence of.

In all honesty id go for the UCH kit not just cos im selling one but because even a key coded in will cost you more as I only want £100 and this will give you two working key fobs and a new key for yours isn't a certain fix anyway
