Immobiliser problems with 1.8 16v

  172 sport/Clio 16v T
I just brought a clio 16v with an immobiliser issue and was wondering if anyone would be able to shed some light on the problem! I've read all previous immobiliser threads.

I brought the car and in it were 2 immobiliser codes from renault, i've entered each code to see if they work with no luck! I've taken the sensor out of the roof an that seems fine. The car turns over when you try to start it with the key. (new battery in fob!)

The key will not un-lock or lock when you press the fob but the led on it comes on!!!

Any help in gettin it goin would be great thanx Tom

my m8 had the same problem he took it 2 renault and they couldnt find the prob in the end it cured its self (because they cleaned and dryed the sensor in the roof plus the terminals) try that clean it with wd40 they told him it was cured n it was the decoder box n changed it which didnt help at all when it happened again i went back with him n there mechanic said its the sensor at the top cos the water from the arial he said just clean it up dis connect n replug it which is wot he does

A standard valver alarm doesn't conform to Thatcham standards, they are not a cat 1 - tbh it may be worth going to an alarm installer for a cat1 alarm. I did as I wanted peace of mind - plus the insurance wouldn't over it without a cat 1 on it.

I believe that thatcham only came about in 1996, so only last valvers will have one that conforms to the standards (don't quote me on that though)

the led may be lighting up on the keys but it dont mean its sending a signal out, you can check them very easy, use a camera phone and point the key at it and press, you should see the diode next to the blade flash when pressing, this cant be seen by eye! (not the red light btw)

the most commen thing is the reciever in the roof, usually get water on them and mess's them up, these are not coded so you could borrow one etc if needed

but the easiest way to get rid of all the std immob issues is get a ph1 ecu, these dont have a immobiliser so will start up fine, then get a decent alarm so the central locking can still be activated etc without needed the std key to work!

Cool thanx for all the info!!

Will a standard phase 1 19 16v ECU do the job as i might be able to borrow one soon??

I have a comfirmation letter from Renault about the alarm, stating that it is a Cat 1

I don't know about a 19 16v ECU tbh but as richy says a Ph1 ECU is the best/easiest option to sort any imobiliser issues as it simply doesn't use the imobiliser.
