Import 182 - Some Advice...?

F

fletchie

Hi,

Can anyone please advise me on the implications/pitfalls of buying an imported car? I'm looking to buy an imported 182 (ff)

I have seen the certificate which states the car is UK compliant. The car was first registered in France (No jokes here please :clown:!!) and then imported into the UK.
Is it true that it will have no alarm? I'm aware that the warranty is for two years only and I noticed that the car has been serviced every 6,000 miles (car is on 23k) which seems odd to me considering France isn't too disimilar in climate to our own - I did read the thread about the Cyprus import and I could see some logic in the frequent service considering the hot, dry cypriot climate, but France?
Local dealer didn't know the car was an import as it had literally just come into the garage this week - I spotted the EU certificate hidden with the rest of the paperwork. They are going to speak to their manager to see what deal they can come up with as I had put through the paperwork to buy this car and I am still interested. I just need some advise on what I should be haggling out for.. (garage is not a renault delaer)

Cheers,

Jean

Sorry....I am in a slightly different position to the other thread though in that I haven't even got the car yet. I guess i'm more worried about it not having an alarm and the fact that it's not coming from a renault dealer so I may be at a disadvantage...

Mine wasn't from a Reanult dealer either. As said, if it's UK spec, you have nothing to worry about. If you are really worried about it not having an alarm just get one fitted as soon as you can. That's what I did.

Well it very much depends on how much you want to spend. I went and got a Viper 480XP, which is a pretty serious alarm and cost me £500 (including anti tilt sensor). You could probably get a pretty decent alarm with just sensors for about £200. Maybe you should take a trip to Halfords to see what is available even if you don't buy one from them, or visit you local alarm specialists or even take a look around the net.

Thanks for the responses (next time i'll check the 'search' function more thoroughly before posting!)

I'm going to see if i can get the dealer to stick an alarm on for me if there isn't one already - it's got 23k on the clock so there's a good chance it may have one. I can always pop back tomorrow to check - another silly question i'm sure, but for my own piece of mind (and bear with me here, i've never owned a renault) i take it if there's an alarm fitted, there will be a flashing red light on the indicator stick? Would this be the same for an aftermarket alarm as well or is there anything else that would indicate an alarm is fitted?

Many thanks again for the advice, it is much appreciated for us clio virgins:eek:

If it has a Renault alarm the flashing red light should be in the middle of the dash above the stereo. I have got a blue lcd light that is now in it's place. I am not an alarm expert so I don't know if all aftermarket alarms have lcd flashing lights, but there should be sensors on the upper right and left pillars (by your sun visors).

Hi,

alarm is already fitted, so no worries here. I will also get the warranty topped up for an extra year so I will be no worse off.

Signed up for the car this evening - just got to wait until the weekend though....:(
