Induction Kits Vs Panel Filter & Whats Heat Soak etc etc

Hi sorry if this is in the wrong section.

I have been trying to explain to one of my mates the advantages over me having a K&N Panel Filter in my standard airbox with my uprated air feed (and removed acoustic valve).

Over an Induction Kit he has on his Mg Zr with the little ducting pipe he has on his car trying to supply cold air :(:(

I tried explaining about heat soak and how hot air aint good to sook in etc etc.

And how the air i'm getting to my air filter is colder etc etc. And better.

Can anyone go into more detail ?

Does the colder air have more oxygen or something in it to help engine run better ?

Or am i speaking garbage.

Colder air is better as it is more dense.

Panel filters are good as they take air through the standard reletively cool airbox and pipes.

Induction kits can vary between open and closed. Closed generally being better as they use a cold air feed such as your mate has. Providing this is well set up it works well and can be better than panel filters but depending on which IK you have.

Open IKs imo are no good as they just soak in the heat from the engine bay.

It really depends on how well your mate has his set up.

I'll answer one of your points for you.

Colder air is harder to burn/atomise therefore more fuel is needed to keep the mixture correct and the engine running correctly (stop detonation etc). A by-product of this is a larger bang (which thus provides more power)

I consider it a by-product but if your soul aim is to increase power then its a benefit.

Saying cooler air is more dense makes perfect sense but I have never understood why someone says cooler air has more oxygen in though...

When air is hot, the airparticals (oxygen) move around faster and therefor further away from eachother. Cold air has more slower moving particals and therefor closer together, "denser".
I'm sure it was something like this ; it was midschool physics if i remember correcty

my mrs has a induction kit on her mgzr, and it makes a really diff. it was on my 172 first but it sufferd from the heat. on the mg, because it has more room under the bonnet than the clio so the air gets to move about its very effective.
