infinity tyres

  Clio 182 ff
Sorry for the long post. I’ve had my car for 3 weeks now and I really like it. In getting more used to it I thought there was something not quite right with the steering and handling. The best way to describe it is a bit unsettled on bends and vibration through the steering wheel at above 4,000 rpm. I bought the car for a cheaper price with high mileage but full history so I could spend the remainder on getting the cam belt, timing belt, dephaser pulley, new shocks/springs etc…. All of this work was done last week and the car was given 12 months mot. On my request everything was checked for movement in the steering column, inner tie rod, engine mounts etc….They found nothing so I just thought it was down to me coming from a rear wheel drive E class Mercedes to Clio 182 and it was torque steer. It’s a lot of power going through the front wheels so I had to treat it with care and go easy. I read the posts on being too heavy footed. On Saturday when the rain started it felt worse wheels spinning, hardly any traction. I drove my wife 2007 fiesta 1.4 zetec later that day on the same roundabouts with no loss of traction or wheel spin. The only thing that I hadn’t changed was the infinity INF05 tyres but as all 4 had 8mm of tread on I thought they would be ok for a few months. I’ve read the reviews but thought they can’t be that bad. I have always bought decent tyres and these were on the car when I got it. Yesterday, I got 4 Michelin PS3 fitted at a local garage. From the moment I left the garage I felt a difference. I cannot believe that tyres would have such an effect on a car. All vibration through the steering wheel above 4,000rpm has gone and no wheel spin. I now understand how the car should feel and it’s handles amazing. I know that Michelin are good but how can manufacturers produce tyres that are this poor and dangerous.

Makes sense though if you think about it mate. Tyres are the contacting material between the car & the road. I never buy ditch huggers.

We have a zafira with 4 new infinity tyres on it, was like that when we bought it, they are terrible and very vague! Going to replace as soon as funds allow. Very noisey too, sounds like the wheel bearings are gone (did get the garage to check them after a test drive before we bought it lol)

Felt like i was at an eye test lol. Agreed 'some' budget tyres are crap, 'some' are good though. I can never understand why people who know the tyres are crap (especaily this time of year) don't replace them asap, baffling.

Sorry about the early morning eye test and lack of paragraphs.
I totally agree about the cheap tyres but we are talking about the Michelins in the wet being equal/better to the infinity's in dry conditions. They really are, that bad. Poor traction, loose/vague steering and vibration on nearly new tyres. I just didn't expect the gulf to be so great as to turn a clio sport in to a nervous drive in any weather conditions.

Until I replaced the tyres the clio was not the best handling car I had driven but it is now by a long way. I'm really happy. I thought it's best to share this experience because if anybody buys a 182 with these tyres on they are not getting the car how it was intended to be!

Imagine that same situation, but with a knackered rear passenger shock, and an incorrect rear drivers shock (too long) and you'll can imagine how mine handled until recently :dapprove:

Infinities were on the back of the gf's old Clio. Back end stepped out in a big way at 20mph on a roundabout on the way to work. She span it a few times.

Utterly hideous tyres. I'd rather paint the wheels black and pretend they're rubber. Would give more grip !

:D I see you've got an impreza, I used to have a blob sti but had to get rid of it due to high mileage to work 3 years ago. I did get a bit addicted to the extra power though and the JGM tuned it upto 350bhp with mods:eek:. Miss the car but not the cost of fuel. ;) I was considering a hatch type but knew I would end up trying for more power again. I was a member on scoobynet forum for a couple of years and really enjoyed the forums. Seems this place is very similar.

Yeah mate I've got a classic, my fourth impreza. Also a member on scoobynet which is a good forum, this one takes the honours though.
