I don't think tesco will insure anyone on an RS if they are under 21 .. even as a named driver .. iirc ..

Best thing to do would be for your mum to ring round a couple to get a rough idea .. try adrian flux and A Plan maybe ??? drop me a pm if you want the numbers ..

Marie :D

anyone know roughly what I'm looking at, might be a silly idea but mum said she would buy my car off me to share with my brother, then I could get a 172 :D

so you wouldnt actually be the policy holder?

probably looking at around £2k for your mum's insurance and you bolted onto the policy.

All depends on your mum's previous driving record though :)

ps, i would really suggest you have your own policy, in your own name.

That way the policy will still be legal :)

  Golf GTI 1.8T
oh yeah forgot to mention we both have extremely clean license :)

fubs why wouldnt it be legal, says 'add named driver' and thats what I'll be :)

Named driver, not main driver tho.
Some companies are ok with this, but for most they say the policy holder must be the main user of the vehicle.

well I'm at work mon-fri and only use my car on the weekend and very occasionally in the evening so that would make her the main driver...

I have my own policy at the mo, and its gonna be 900ish to renue in may, thought a 172 in mummys name might not be much over that...

Get yout own policy and transfer your own NCB onto it.

Dont be a pleb and get involved in what the industry calls "fronting".
Not only will you be breaking the law but your mother will too.

  Golf GTI 1.8T
hows that breaking the law?

surely if your a named driver you can drive the car?

the NCB I will have wont be any use, I cant afford £3k insurance like some.

Many people try to avoid higher premiums by insuring a car in a parents name and adding a younger driver.

Technically this is called "fronting" and it is to be avoided. In the worst case, should you do this, a claim could be called invalid meaning that you would not receive a payout and the younger driver could be convicted of driving without insurance.

As a minimum the fine would be severe and 6 points is generally the basic penalty. For young drivers this could potentially mean the loss of their license.

A vehicle being used for commuting by a student could be the evidence an insurance company would need to invalidate the policy for fronting.

The safest course of action is to insure in the young drivers name. This carries the extra benefit of them being able to accumulate their No Claims Bonus.

So if my mum has a bump in my car tomorrow my insurance is gonna be invalid for her claim

better get her taken off asap...

I can understand where you are coming from, for this reason is why I have my own policy and threw £1466 into tescos bank account last year.

But I dont really use my car that often so seems pointless me being a main driver, I cant see why if I'm only using the car for 2 days out of 7 that I cant be insured as a named driver. Technically I'd be doing the correct thing cos my mum would be using the car in the daytime and more than me.

m1tch, its still gonna be up around 2k i reckon.

you'll end up paying the price when you become independant... i have 4 years NCD now and cheap insurance at 22 because ive paid the price for the previous years.

in your scenario when your independant you'll have to drive around in a shitbox because you have no driving history as far as insurers are concerned.

Yeah right, we both know that is not going to be the case!

Not being funny but If you can't insure the car properly then you can't really afford it can you?

  Golf GTI 1.8T
ahhh thats gay!

looks like I'll have to get a new bike instead then :) least I can do 0-60 in 2.5 secs and go to 140mph+ for insurance for under £500 FC.

Insurance really has got stupid aint it.

I dont mind my lil 1.4, its plenty quick enough for what i need, just might have the oppertunity for something better and I wont be here in 4 years to take advantage of my no claims bonus anyway :(

already is mate, as said I work mon - fri and only use the car on the weekends. mum uses it in the week when bro has her car. so technically she is driving more than me, thus invalidating her insurance on my policy??

I drove a s**t L reg 1.4 Astra from 00-01, an X reg 1.4 Clio S between 01 and 03.

Bought the 172 at end of 2003 and paid £700 to insure it - Not bad for a 23 yr old with only 3 years no claims.

As a great Irish prophet once said "good things come to those that wait"

if she drives the car more than you then she should be the policy holder. :)

where you going in 4 years time?

ahhh this old classic !

If your mum drives the car more than you Mitch then you won't have a problem.
If anything was to happen to the car, then its possible that they might ask your neighbours who normally drives the car - but I doubt they would.

It will benefit you though to start getting your own ncd (maybe you already have some - I haven't read it all:eek: ) if not get 1 yrs ncd on your current car then get the 172 policy in your name.

  Golf GTI 1.8T
I will have 1 NCB in may, but that wont hardly dent a 172 policy of my own lol

thanks for your help guys. looks like a diffinate no no and 10 lines on the lottery sat hehe

i think mum has a fetish for the leather seats really lol, beats her mk1 ph2 diesel

Oh and I'll be back home in Oz hopefully :D

  Golf GTI 1.8T
thats what I was talking about craig, cos I will be 19 then with 1 ncb, my insurance is still gonna be over £900 tho and thought if I spent out a bit more I might be able to get a 172 and pay a bit more for the insurance.

If I ever meet an underwriter in the future I'll make sure I give them a jab where it hurts for everyone! :)

insurance companies belong in special homes!! they are so backward! grrr, probably one of lifes most annoying things!

have you tried insureing the 172 in your name(your policy) and your mum as a added driver it will reduce you quote quite alot.
