insurance claims for young drivers...

was having an argument with a bloke at work yesterday, about young drivers being statistically involved in more accidents, im not arguing with that as you cant argue with numbers...

however, i was trying to get my point across that most young drivers, 17-21 dont have a lot of money saved up in case they have an accident and therefore have to go through insurance, whereas older drivers have money in the bank because they have been working for a longer period, therefore meaning if they have an accident they can pay privately and not go through insurance and making a claim.

am i talking crap!?

no, i had to go through insurance when i crashed, simply because i couldnt afford to fix it.. im 19

Older people tend to have more commitments so do not agree with you.

thats just the way i see it, i understand more claims are made by young drivers, but the way i see it is because of the point i made above.

got wound up at work because the bloke wouldnt have any of what i was saying!

^^ your 19 with a 182?!how much is the insurance with that??

i don't care if young drivers crash, its called experience, so let them crash. also they should work out the statistics correctly, and compare the number of young drivers to old drivers then work out the figures. cos there are probably 90% older drivers and 10% younger drivers. so they should say how many older people crash and how many young people crash then it will be the other way around

Also, younger people can't afford to buy houses, cos we have been out priced, so what else we got to spend out money on apart form sporty cars and mods. lower house prices then we won't spend on our cars

Commitments called mortgages, pensions and children. If anything, younger people have more ability financially to pay outside insurance.

from the statistics i have seen, they work out the number of young drivers, example 10% of drivers are in the age group 17-21, and then cvalculate how many accidents are had by people in this age group, and if this percentage is higher than the percentage of people in this age group they are classed as high risk??

i can see your point 100% so not trying to argue with you...

but older people are on more money, plus if you have a mortgage then you may be married/partner who contributes to running the house.

i know with more money you learn how to spend it so you always want more, but if you get paid more you can afford to save more, im currently saving a fair wack of my wages for a house deposit, insurance monthly, rent for my parents, then money to live, petrol etc.

now i know the only real thing i have to pay at the minute without getting in trouble is my insurance on my car, however i continue to save the rest because it makes me want to crash even less because of the free money i leave myself after payday.

i am only 17, and a second year apprentice, so im not on a large amount of money at all, but all of it is spoken for in a way, like i said above, whereas older people will have been saving for years, for a rainy day as it is called, and possibly will have this money to cover expenses in an accident.

no-one believes you?! why would you lie?!

that is cheap, but if its a glitch in the system anything is possible, i got a quote on a 1.8t convertible a4 when i had just passed my test for £800ish fully comp!

well i dunno, probably as i dont have any no claims, and have a crash declared.. but it was about 500 cheaper than admiral, and my proof of insurance form is all correct, so dont think it is a glitch

It's the same as anything though, you can't tar everyone with the same brush. There are many younger drivers who are very good at driving just as much as there are many older people who don't have two brass farthings to rub together.

Statistically the poorer people in the most debt are between 50-60.

by a glitch i mean when insurance companies update their databases, for a split second some quote may get through and given a low, or very high premium.
