insurance on a 172! ahhh!!

i cant believe how much it is... theyre not supercars for goodness sake. Im nearly 20 one years no claims, and companies are coming back with quotes like £4,500.

Theyre so rude too!

Ive shopped round too, not like its a one off or something, and its not my area either...

  Not a Clio

this might make you sick... been quoted just over £800 on a 3.0i 24v V6.

My brother is 21 now i think and he was quoted £1500 on a 172.

Try getting a quote with a couple of relatives as named drivers, I got a quote for £1200 at 21, with 1 years ncb, and with my Mom and Dad as 2nd and 3rd named drivers.

SORRY I POSTED IT TWICE

ill try greenlight.. i live in a nice area too... dodgy city (bradford ) but a nice suburb area.

my dad has 9 points and my mum has 6 so i doubt it will bring it down LOL

stick your mum on it, I bet it will go down, even if she has 6 points, dont put your dad on.

put your aunt on instead.

Get a quote with elephant and put someone over 25 with no convictions on it - my friend at work is 19 and she bought a 106 gti - ins was 1062 but with meon it (26) it dropped £200.

A lot of guys on here go with places like admiral and elephant that tend to give moderate quotes for young drivers. Give them a try, and put low risk drivers as yournamed drivers. You should get quote down to nearly £1000 i reckon

Nothing wrong with that, its what I have done, as long as the named drivers actually drive the car at some point

no they have to drive the car the most out of all the drivers otherwise they arnt the main driver !! its called fronting and its not allowed

If you are the owner and registered keeper of the car and its insured in your mum/dads name and you crash it your insurance will be void if they check it out

Thats not what has been said though, we are saying that have yourself as the main driver, with low risk drivers (ie parents) as named drivers

  182 and 5 GTT

im 19 and i got quoted £2100. few of my mates are paying £2600. Elephant will give you a quote for about any car, but privilidge (sp) are the cheapest

wait until you can afford it then.

insurance premiums are high for a reason... they consider you a risk. I was in the same position as you, so i just waited until i was 21 with 3 years NCD to get my 172.

Im now paying £1080 with Greenlight, all mods declared.

I didnt mean get insured on your parents policy and then you be the main driver i meant, get insure in your own name for wahtever quote, and put low risk drivers like your parents on to make it a bit cheaper, plus if they ever did need to borrow the car, the option is there!!

greenlight wont insure under 21s and i think you need a years no claims.

I waited til i was 21 and got insurance with direct line, only thing is they dont let under 25s mod :(

build up a few more years NCB, dont go givin away your hard earned to these bloody pirates!

I noticed a big drop from quotes of £3500 - £4000 or the usual we wont insure under 21s when I was 20 to quotes of between £2000 and £1400 when i was 21

Well mine dropped nearly £1500 cause Im now 21..........it was £2540 last year (20) and the quote this year is £1057 (21) :D

Although last year they did say that when insuring a high grouped car that after the 1st year........when you have a history with that car then it would drop big time................although I didnt expect it to drop £1500 eh!

I dont know how people can pay this kind of money! Your mate must have really wanted that car to be throwing away stupid amounts of money like that!

well im 21 (but 20 on the insurance policy) with one years NCB & one accident and im only gonna be paying £1500 total for my car fully declared with a 172 engine in it!

they wanted 2k for a normal 172 with my mods on it! insurance is wierd sometimes...

First ever post - be kind to me! :)

Im getting a 172 next week (a 53 plate 172). I currently drive a Dynamic (sp?) 1.6 which I was paying about £500 for (Im 30, full no claims, though I live in North London and have to park in the street - gulp!) with Tescos. They are charging me £60 to change to the 172 and it looks like a full year will cost me about £700 - not bad for London. Anyway, Ive been dealing with the sharks that are insurers for years, as Im sure others here have, so some tips might be:

1. Phone around, and then phone around again, and then again until you are happy! I do this every year and as they usualy want your business you should be able to beat them down a bit. Play the insurance companies off against each other. Its amazing how the phrase "Well I have the Direct Line quote here and its chaper than yours" can save you money.
2. If you are young (or not that young!) have you tried Endsleigh? They specialise in Student insurance and I was with them for a few years. They can be quite cheap.
3. Limit your milage on the policy - not always an easy option but it helps saves pennies...
4. As people have said above, try to include a femail relative/partner as a named driver. Having my girlfirend as a named driver saved me about £60 a year on my insurance and it means she can drive it if she needs to (if I have a few drinks in the pub she can drive home!).
5. Protect your no claims as soon as you can. Costs more but saves you a lot if, like me, you smash up the front of your 6 month old Clio! (I had jet lag...)

Sorry if thats stating the bloody obvious! ;)

Ive been convinced for years that insurance is a cartel - all the companies collude to make prices higher. Me, paranoid? :) Insurance is a pig until you hit 25, where it gets a bit better, but when you get to 30 it drops way down (though you do feel very old!). The difference between my 172 quote now and when I was 28 is a few hundred quid (which is why I didnt get the car in the first place!)

Anyway, back to my life as a ClioSport lurker...

Obvious point is to shop around, shop around some more, then start adjusting minute little options in the policy quote, then shop around some more.

I bought my first car above a 1.2 3 months ago (172 Cup), 23 yrs old, 5 yrs NCB, pass-plus. Quotes started off at around the £1300 mark and some were pushing £2k, after lots of work I tried Elephant and got about £750. So then I went to work on their online quote system, adjusting annual mileage (still within my actual yearly mileage), adding various family members as additional drivers etc. Eventually hit the jackpot when I added my 23yr old girlfriend as a second driver, despite having no NCB (she has only just insured her first car, but it doesnt matter) it brought my quote down to £580 or thereabouts, they ask for very few details of additional drivers but what they do ask for matters, she is a teacher and therefore is classed as a professional, and Im sure thats what nailed it for me.

I would always suggest getting insured yourself from day one. Me and my other half are both 23, both had licenses the same amount of time, but she is a professional and lives in a much better area, yet she is paying more than me on an older 1.4 (grp 7 I think) MG ZR. The reason being that she has always been insured on her Mums car as an additional driver before (legally, she never used to drive much) and therefore has no NCB. Its a big big hit to shell out £1000+ every year whilst 18/19/20 etc but it saves hundreds when you get a bit older and want to insure something really insane!

Do the named people on the policy have to live at the same address?
Im sure i was told this, so you cant put your Aunt Nellie who lives in the back end of bumblefcuk on the policy just to reduce the cost.

I always increase my excess and take off extra crap like guaranteed hire cars to reduce my policy.

The only good thing about being over 30 was the 182 used to cost £385 fully comp.

My additional driver lives in a different town and I had no problems. You could put anyone on there by the looks of things, seems a bit odd.
