Go and get a few quotes, see what comes up. You might be surprised. There are some young lads on here who drive 172s/182s who pay a lot for insurance, but not silly money...

£2 to £3k Id guess it wont be cheap youll have to try every company under the sun before you get covered.

^ thanks for the replies guys. I was thinking either a 182 (grp 16) or a uk scooby 210hp(grp 17), but apparently the impreza would be MUCH more for some reason even though its hardly quicker and worth less (guess its that word turbo eh).

if i can get insurance for £2k i will buy one, but not really prepared to pay more than 2k. Are these performance insurance companies any good with things like this, the max power type? lol

My friend has a corsa with a 2.0 calibra engine in it and he pays 1500, exactly the same situation as me, so mine shouldnt be that much more should it?

thanks iceblue, will do. ill get some quotes online, but theyre never as accurate as when u call em are they...
Nope, which in this instance will probably work in your favour. None of the companies I rang (and I rang a lot!!) could touch the online companies.

One guy I spoke to said that online insurance companies dont "play fair". Doent bother me. My insurance for my 172 was £650 this year, 24 , 2 years NCB with a claim 3 years . Cheap as Chips.

^ Tried it, they wont quote me online .... not the best sign

will give em a call sometime when i can be bothered, are there any smaller (poss private) companies anyone knows of that are good??

Once you get a quote, they usually give you the option to save it - therefore you pay what they quoted you online. You get a certain amount of time to purchase etc.

The problem is that many insurance companies dont chnarge much for engine transplants therefore he is insuring it the same as if it were a nomal car almost.

wheres the sense in that? Its faster than a calibra cos its so much lighter, and yet cheaper to insure than if he had just bought a calibra straight off! surely doing things like engine transplants hints that your going to drive it faster!

so do you reckon if i put a 172 engine in my 1.4 shell it would be cheaper to insure than a 172?

thanks for the replies

the cost of the premium reflects the value of the car as well as the power etc.

the value af a transplanted corsa is jack compared with a calibra ergo the premium may be less.

no one will insure you for anything other than fully comp on a 182 and in most cases for anything 5k and over as well

^depends obviously on the age of the calibra, but he couldnt even get insured on an ancient calibra, but i get what you mean. depends on things like where you live as well right... Bradford probably isnt the best place  hehe. will try confused.com later, its not working at the mo for me

a lot insurance companies base their premiums on how many claims a certain model of car has had in the past, people were reporting that the 182 is cheaper to insure than a 172, only because the 172 has been around a lot longer than the 182 so more claims have been made for 172s. the insurance for me on a TVR cerbera is £1400 compared to £1000 for my 172. Now that is bugger all difference for a car that is in a different league to a 172. i asked someone about this and they said that TVRs have had relatively few claims only because they are quite a rare car.

Mate, just done an online quote using your age and NCB and it comes out at £4300 with http://www.admiral.comwww.admiral.com!! and thats 10 months accelerator!! So prepare for some silly prices mate!

  A slow one :-(

Tescos quoted me 1200 on a 182. 2 NCBs and am 22.

Insurance is getting worse and worse. My mate paid 1200 on a UK Impreza with exactly the same stats as me 2 years ago. Its going to cost me 2k to get insured on a scooby now!

ok..... get ready, got one of those online quotes that searches loads of companies.... and the cheapest the search came back with was from Zenith

£7,057!!!!!! with a £950 excess!!!!

what...a farse.
