insurance seems stupid sometimes

  BMW M135I
Rang flux up today to get a quote to update my policy from my 1.4 16v to a 172 standard

Anyway the reply i got was i cant because i have a claim going through at the moment and because the file is open i cant do it, even though i recieved a letter on monday stated it was been closed when my payment has been sent, which was tuesday when i rang which i explained

I then asked about cancelling the policy but staying with flux and they said i would have to pay the rest of the years premium (5 months) to be able to do it just because i had been in a crash ( which is non fault)

i dont understand why i have to pay the rest when i cant change my policy even though ive been in a crash which is non fault and flux recieve their expenses from the other side anyway (robbing gits)

To top it off they said i wasnt old enough (20 year old) to insure me on that car with my current insurer (modified cars with highway) even though i have driven my brothers arctic vxr

im thinking of just asking to see if i can update my policy to give me third party on other vehicles so i can drive it until my insurance is due for renewal

So has the claim been settled or not? I'd go back to them on this point. It sounds as if it has, in which case their response was inaccurate and not valid as an excuse to insure your new vehicle.

I wouldn't be happy with this response either. I'd tell them to cancel your current policy, ask for a refund (you will lose a 'handling fee'), and then call back as a 'new' customer... or of course punt around elsewhere.

TBH I'm not surprised on this one. I am 54 and my previous insurer refused to insure my standard 172, even with 9 years NCB. Some insurers just don't like performance cars, and I'm afraid none like young drivers :dapprove:... a case of guilty before proven innocent in my book.

I am no expert in insurance matters, though I have learnt that insurance has become much more of an issue for me, now driving a performance car.

Good luck mate.

yeah it has been settled just their system hasnt been up[dated by looks of things.

I know about the handling fee, i dont mind if its the case they waint insure me, its the fact i have to pay 5 months for nothing really

And finally, its a std 172, look in the top sticky on young insurers and that will highlight the fact that even 19 y/o can get 182 quotes for under 2k but for some reason, same insurer waint quote me and im a year older with extra year no claims.

BIZZARE!!

Im 25 (was 24 when i took this policy) with 1yr ncb and only started driving in Nov 07.

Only cost me an extra £350 to upgrade from a 1.4 16 Si to a 172. Go figure.

I got quoted on a standard 172, got told the same and I'm with the same insurers as you but on my 1.2. They said they'd look into other companies for me, came back and said £7k.

Might be worth getting a load of other quotes and waiting until the 5 months is up if there's nothing else you can do.

If you upgrade your insurance to let you drive other vehicles 3rd party, you can't drive ones in your name so be aware of that. Is it really worth having just 3rd party insurance on a 172?
