insurence on a 172

  was black/gold ff 182

right just sold my car now looking on insureing on a 172 , i am 19 and i am going to be staying on my dads insurence but i will be named driver any one know any good insurence companys with sensible quetos please thanks

so, youre going to try and defraud the insurance company by pretending your father is the main driver?

Its people who do this sh*te that really annoy me. Do they think come the time they have an accident, the insurance company is REALLY going to believe that the 48 year old man has a Clio 172 AND a sensible car that would be appropriate for him? Just how stupid do you think claims assesors really are?

If you cant afford to insure a car in your own name PROPERLY, you cant afford to own the car

have you thought of this...... if you where to have an accident and they find out (which they will easily) that youre the main driver of the car, not only can/will they throw your claim out, but the poor smuck you might have ran into will also end up paying for your fraud too !!!!

if your going to be the named driver then ya might as well jus have ya own insurance as it works out exactly the same as your above way. some companys like elephant sometimes give you a discount if ya add ya dad as a second driver which is what you are looking @ doing anyway.

so get ya own insurance and build up ya own no claims.

save up money.... work your way up with a slower car in your name and build up NCD.

Afterall it will only benefit u in th elong run.... proove to the insurance company u dont have claims after claims....then get insured on one. Its only a few years wait.

Well ive tried to express how i see it.

Its the honest way to go really.

Ive now been driving 4.5 years.
I have 3yrs NCD and never had a claim or accident. Along with a clean license.

ive now been gettign quotes for 172/182s and they are very reasonable as well as vavlers.

im not looking to change cars yet, but i feel i have built up a fair bit of driving knowledge along the way.

I still enjoy driving my car with the mods i have done, its fun small and saves em money on petrol and insurance.

i am not trying to do it as a fraud or any s**t like that i have been on my dads for two years now i started on his because when i first started to drive i could not afford to pay £1500 on my own insurence which was on a clio 1.2 , now if i want to start on my own it will be £3300 on a 172 which no way i am paying so i would rather stay on his for now i am currently with cis and when i asked about all this he advised me to stay on my parents till i was 21 , ps think i worded the first one wrong i am sure i am curerenlt insured under additional driver or something which i no is all legit as had cis addviser sort it all out ric

i think youll find that owning a car and insuring yourself as a named driver on your dads policy is 100% illegal, if you are the main driver of the car, the policy must be your own

the CIS advisor wouldnt care less, for him its another sale, legality doesnt come into it, sadly your insurance could easily be voided in the event of an accident if you are found to be the main driver when only named on a policy

had you paid the 1200 for the 1st years insurance, you would now be reaping the benefits of no claims discount, instead youare a year or two behind everyone, youre dad wont be around to bail you out forever, start now

as ive said before, if you cant afford to insure the car yourself, you cant afford the car

simple!!!

CupMad......that is a very informative link !!!

i only skimmed over the page very quickly but it shows exactly wot most people get wrong.....

it is WELL WORTH READING people. Even if only a quick glance especially for young drivers.

yeah just read your post , very helpful didnt know all that but i no the way i will be doing it is fine like said before cis adviser has been through it all beofre there queto was just to high , true peter but surely how it has been for the last 2 years is still ok , not trying to argue about the point just want to know where i stand , my dad has been ring around about queotes all day and the way they have all explained it to us is that it will be fine to have me added as the additional driver ?

its fine to add you as the ADDITIONAL driver, if thats what you really are

but youre not, youre the MAIN driver

every possible question you can try and come up with is answered in that link

[Edited by CupMad on 20 June 2005 at 7:45pm]

Its fine to add you, so you can drive it now and again. But your the main driver in reality, driving it all the time.

Youve got to start your own insurance one day, your probably bored of the speed of your 1.2 now, but what happens when your bored of the cup? there are faster cars out there! Are you going to get that insured on your dads aswel?

Get your own F*ckin insurance!
Dont rinse off your parents.
If your not old enough to get insured its because your too young to be driving a 2.0 clio!
Best idea is to get a 1.2 on finance for a couple of years then when your old enough just trade it in,thats what i did!
No offence to anyone who is a NAMED driver for the car they drive but imo is just WRONG!

let me get this clear for you

your dad owns the car
your dad holds the insurance policy
your dad is listed as the main driver
youre listed as an additional driver

you are the main driver and your dad is an additional driver

this IS fraudulent information, as ive said, this IS illegal, the CIS salesman wont care less about legalities, hes a sales person, commision based no doubt, so a sale is a sale.

the law however isnt commission based, and they want things done properly

as ive said above, if you cant afford the car and the 3k insurance, you cannot afford the car!!!

learn your lesson, and not the hard way, if you have a bash, the assessor could have it investigated (2nd policy owned by your dad will be a massive giveaway) you then gain points on your licence, fines, and a big old bill for repairs to both your own car and any 3rd parties involved as your insurance will be invalid!!

is this clear, or do you still think its legal?

ricclio they are all going to say the same thing. if ya gonna be main driver then might as well have ya own insurance as it will be same price as being the main driver on ya dads insurance.

ignore what the insurance sales person says as they aint got a clue 99% of the time. so when and if it came to you needing a pay out then ya insurance can be voided. trust me the insurance companys will do everything in their power not to have to make a pay out. they are happy to take your money but not easy to get it back out of them.

19y/o + 172 = High probability of a smash!

my sister in law and family were almost wiped out by an inexperienced driver in an escort Gti (he died)- fortunately his insurance was all above board, but the hassle his insurance put her and her family through was shocking, and they were totally blameless!

Likes been said before - if you cant afford the insurance for a performance car its for a reason (age/location/experience/history) dont look for cheaper alternatives they are likely to bite you on the arse!

That is the best line i like to hear from someone in your situation.

start looking at something nippy.... such as a 106 quicksilver? or thereabouts

it MAY cost u about £1100 in insurance thsi year as u have no NCD, but next year u will have 1yrs and it shud come down a fair bit.

I paid £1700 on a 1.0 Micra !!! in my first year then £1400 then £998.....

as u see it has cost me loads of money, but i had the feeling that i was insured properly in the event of somethign going wrong.

It has been worthwhile as i can now show the insurance companies ive never claimed !! and they help me in return with cheaper quotes for my possible 182 i want to buy....

Good luck with everything.... and dont hesitate to post up on here again. I know u will sometimes get harsh answers, but at least were being honest and trying to possibly save you from court action etc.. in the future.

:D

When i started to drive *cough* 15 years ago i started of with a banger and built up over the years. Now young boy racers want high peformance and expensive cars cheap and low insurance costs. My advice with out sounding like a old man is buy a low powerd small car and build up your no clams

Listen to the above!!! I used to be insured on my dads garage policy, But due to me being a bad boy and getting points, they took me off, i then become a named driver on my grans policy. "Fronting it" a very bad plan as last month i wrote off the car and very nearly didnt get any insurance money. Luckily for me i slipped through the net. Although i was the 3rd party in the accident, i could have been liable for the taxi "Arsebandit aswell"

Im now on my own policy, like every one else...Payin stupid money on a modified 1.2! Why i ask myself! Cause im a muppet!

Im glad youre seeing sense now ricclio - its better in the long run.

I was a named driver on my parents insurance until I was 22 - although I truthfully wasnt the main user until maybe the final year before getting my own policy. But I got away with it. And now I understand how wrong I was to have done it.

When I was 22 I transferred ownership on the car (Punto Sporting) to me from my dad, got my own policy, and paid a fortune as I had no NCB.

In hindsight (such a great thing), I wish Id got my own insurance from a much earlier age. I renewed my policy last night - now with 3yrs NCB - but wouldve had 5+ NCB if Id started my own insurance earlier, and be paying less now.

this is a good topic....

I can see where your cuming from wanting to go under your dads name coz it will be cheaper an u can get a faster car, alot of my mates have done this too....

But i think its best you go under your own name. This is what i did, yes it will cost you loads to insure a car in your name for the 1st time but trust me its worth it in the long run mate. i bought a 1.4ls corsa for my first car an had to pay £1800 to insure it. 4 years lata with 4ncb (5 in a few months touch wood) it now costs me £400.

Im also looking at getting a 172 now.. so maybe its best you do start with a smaller engine an build up your ncb...

Why dont you do it the opposite way around, have you as the main driver and your dad as a named driver? I put my parents as named drivers (not fraudulant as they do drive my car all the time) and it halved my insurance quote. Ive got a 1.2 with various body mods, exhaust, etc and my insurance is just $700 with full legal expenses cover and guarenteed coutesy car.

The car must also be registered to the person who is the policy holder!

I guess people who lease or have them on finance deals are screwed then :)

You dont need to be the registered keeper, depends on the insurer.

How else could you insure a leased car which you will never own during the term of the lease? Or a car on finance where you dont own it until the end of the agreement?

But even if you do have a car on finance I think you are still considered as the registered keeper arent you? Dont think you have to have paid the full amount for the car before you are considered the registered keeper.

I think people are laying into this guy too much, if hes 19 and not looked into it before then that probably is what he thinks, its what I thought when I was 17, why would you think any different when most people do think thats the way to do it.

perhaps if it werent for all the tossas with no insurance/license at all, putting premiums up accross the board it wouldnt be so bad, there the assholes, just cos your 19/20/21 dont mean you cant drive a car sensibly - 3.5k is ridiculous.

and somethig else, what if it is his dads car, he is a named driver, his dad uses it most of the time, the son uses it on a sunday once a week and has a crash, saying they wouldnt pay out? they would, or whats the point in having a named driver?

but then, if they were suspicious about who the main driver was, how could they prove that it wasnt the dad driving all through the week and was the son? or if the dad went on holiday for a couple of weeks and the son uses it, does that mean hes not insured?

Registered keeper is whoevers name is on the V5, I know with my folks leased cars they dont even see the V5. Tax gets sent to them by the lease company every year.

Im guessing on finance (not had a car on finance so no idea) you get the V5 (or whatever its called now) in your name?

They can prove it believe me, infact they dont have to prove it just void your insurance on the suspect of!!

People should get there own insurance for there own car! Like said before if you cant afford to insure it you cant afford it!! Im 23 and because ive always had my own policy i can insure a 172 and a FRS sensible price!! You gotta pay it some time! You cant live off your mummys all your lives!!!
