Insurers using replica Parts rather than OEM

I still would have liked to think that in the event my insurance was having to repair my car, they'd be using genuine items and not a copied item, unless they specifically cleared it up with you up front!
I've no idea how common this is through the industry though, surely if you were looking to do it on the cheap with copied aprts, you wouldn't be using insurance in the first place!

Interesting, I never knew that. I could imagine if you'd fitted a pattern part which then broke down and caused you to have another crash, the insurance company would be unhappy about it!

Hmmm about 5 years too late. Weird the sudden outrage.

This is why I pay more for my policy with a company who I know don't use pattern/replica/non gen parts.

Or as we call them, wang pang parts.

Do people not read their policies? Maybe it's just me!

No, people do not, and when things don't go the way they expect, they blame the insurers. Eg, untick the courtesy car box on the price comparison site, be outraged when no courtesy car is offered when a claim comes in. People are actually that clever!

An everyday occurrence for us chap. The Rolex comparison is not relevant unless your policy stated replace with replica.

The plot thickens further when as time goes on the manufacturer themselves does the same thing anyway.

Just cause it comes in a renault box doesnt mean its exactly the same quality of component as when your car was new.

Does it fit ok?
Does it do the job it's supposed to?
Is it covered by a warranty?

Don't see an issue...

OEM parts cost, that costs passed to us the consumer, if insurance as a business can reduce my over heads by reducing theirs then what's the issue.

No they don't fit. No they don't really do the job and no their bumpers are not crash tested in a lot of cases.

A long while back granted I rebuilt the front end of my MK4 Escort with pattern parts (Bonnet, wings, slam panel) all fitted fine, admittedly I did use a genuine bumper as the pattern ones were shocking.)

If you take out mobile phone insurance and then break your phone, would you be happy at receiving a replica iPhone?

No, but I wouldn't be fussed if it had a 3rd party screen fitted so long as it fitted correctly and looked oem... You could argue warranties on electronics as well, you buy a new iphone and if it's swapped out you get a refurb rather than new.

Old school panels are actually very good. s**t metal but much much better fitment.

Don't get me wrong, if I was knocking about in a new Audi / BMW etc and had a bump I wouldn't be happy with pattern parts, however IMO they have a place, if it was a choice of writing off a motor Vs pattern part repair for example id go pattern part (and probably punt the car on shortly after).

I'd wager that many if the 'Mint' older Fords have pattern parts fitted, as gally mentions though older pattern parts were probably 'better' than modern panels.

The insurer I used to work for was heading towards no pattern parts as it was causing complaints. You would be surprised how many more cars are repairable because the DAL parts are so much cheaper.

as gally says though, too late, there is usually a clause saying we may use replica or green parts

A friends MK4 R32 was bashed into 6 weeks ago which damaged the steering rack amongst other parts. They are struggling to get hold of a genuine VW replacement part and so he gave the garage permission to fit a reconditioned unit. The insurers rejected this as it is part of the vehicle safety system and a new genuine part must be fitted. VW have to get some made and it will be February before he gets the car back!

What insurer is that, they must be crazy, we used to be more than happy to do that if they put in writing/email/recorded call that they were happy for it to happen. Used to save a little too.

He has the right to have that rack fitted if he wants

I think it's Elephant. They refused to allow the garage to fit it. He wants the car back so as long it is safe, he's not bothered but they just won't allow it. He is currently driving a diesel insignia which is horrible to drive!

That's insurance co's for you, always trying to cut costs.

They are running a business, sadly some people think insurance is a right. You also choose your policy and insurer. I chose to pay more per year to go with an insurer I trust and know inside out.

TBH if someone offered me a completely free diesel insignia with no running costs other than fuel till feb I'd be quite happy to use it rather than having to stomach the cost of tyres/service/depreciation etc on my own cars.

  DON'T SEND ME PM'S!!
I see a lot that people don't know have been previously repaired, but you can tell straight away. The most annoying one on a 172/182 is the front grille, they're about the same price for genuine as a pattern part, but the pattern ones are a shockingly bad fit. Slam panels for mk2 Clios are hilarious too, I had to rectify one by slotting all the holes about 10mm just the get the bonnet catch to work properly. The worst bit about that is, I offered a genuine used one to the owner for free but the body shop didn't want to use it.

That's why its pattern ;) just slight difference in need of a little wiggling.
Chip-mk1 The insignia has worse visability than pete tong when he's happy. Impossible not to crash or hit stuff in them.
