Intercooler upgrade

Hey guys, has anybody upgraded the Intercooler on their Clio 182 turbo? Mine has the ED Intercooler that I originally fitted with the kit.

Any info on size, make would be appreciated without me having to do loads of research!

Cheers

Yep..

Much better than the cheap ebay ones.. My brothers megane engined made more power with less boost after swapping to this intercooler as it was so much more efficient and cooled the charge air well.. The gt2560r turbo he has is pretty much at its max at around 1.2 bar making 300bhp on the megane engine which needs more boost compared to a clio engine to make good power.

Just about fits under the crash bar but needs slight modification to get it as high up as possible

For the price I don't think you'd get a better cooler, rated to 500bhp too apparently

Excellent, thank you for that, I will have a look into it! Looks like it should go in okay without too much fuss... may go for a black one too [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]

Can you spray the intercoolers black? I always think they look odd behind the bottom grill and would rather they were dark. More sleeper!

Really tempted to get this too. Is there two mounting points at the top of the intercooler?

Ideally the crash bar needs trimming to get it to sit a touch higher as the bumper covers the bottom doesn't require anything too drastic.. And yeah I would 100% get the black one as the silver paint is a bit naff

Only had mounting points on one side unfortunately hense why its mounted upside down on my brothers car ?

That’s full commitment! Any strength/rigidity issues with removing the crash bar?

Nope none at all. Anything forward strut tops and engine/box mounts is there purely to hold things in place like wings, lights etc etc. Obviously might not be the best idea to remove all if it’s a daily. But for a track car with a full cage no issues.

Nice, it is a fair old lump of metal too.. does get in the way, working around it fitting oil coolers and Intercoolers is a pain in the arse!

i'm not a massive fan of the churbos, good cooler will always help but i'd say to go for a good turbo first as it will work well even with a cheapy cooler.
presuming you are chasing more power though sorry?

No not chasing power, more maintaining what power I do have on hot track days... it’s not bad. Never really a slouch but can notice a bit of power sapping when hot..

Yeah the turbos with the engine dynamics kit aren’t the best but to be fair it’s not faulted once in 5years of hard work! I’d like to go gen 2 Garret and probably will once I’ve sourced 1 more megane 250 piston, I have 3 which will be going on a set of pec forged rods in the future... so may leave it as is for now. It’s an okay bar and plate cooler in there, just seeing what people have done really

Whats up with the current intercooler ? High charge temps ? Do you have an act gauge hooked up ?

if you're going forged rods then go for new pistons, used 225 pistons are pretty much a waste of time now, seen so many fail. think i threw about 30 into the scrap bin the other week. for the cost of a set of new forged ones it's a no brainer.

Not 225 pistons mate, 250.. totally different, very nice pistons. Forged pistons aren’t for me, it’s a daily car and would kill a set of forged pistons with cold starts, low mileage etc.. I’ve seen far too many slappy oil burning builds to go down that route. Don’t get me wrong they have there use and are great at taking power, heat etc.

Megane 250/265/275 make far too much power for a Clio chassis anyway so around the 300 mark would be plenty for me and reliable with the components I’d like to use.

Not that mine hasn’t been reliable but there is always the underlying thought it’s a de-compressed 182 engine with standard pistons [emoji51]

Nothing much mate, just wondering if I could get something more efficient for the size, just belts and braces really.. the last time It went to the ring and spa it was 55 degree track temps so I was worried about heat. Hopefully it won’t be that hot this year anyway

Lucky to find 250 Pistons. Always keeping my eye open for them but still not managed to pick any up.

Going down that route nice custom cooler won't do any harm then and they don't work out that expensive. I'm just about to do a cooler and hard pipework for a VX220, cooler is almost double the size of the standard one and while set up is goimg to c9st him about half of an upgraded kit would cost from a VX specialist. Once I told him the price he couldn't throw money at me quick enough!!

What gasket you planning on running?

I’ve got 3 very tidy ones and possibly have dibs on a set if they turn out to be in good condition, I’ll be aiming for around 9:1 so a 1.3mm gasket should get me there.. need to have the rods tapered at the end too as the megane 250 rods are.

If you end up with any you don't use give me a shout if you want to get rid.

I'd be tempted to go standard gasket, keep comp up a bit. High comp boosted is fun so gets you part way there.

Yeah, I’m thinking similar! I believe standard megane 250 ratio is 8.5:1 or similar though?

think it's around that, quick guess i'd say stock gasket would take you to smidge over 9.5:1 so would make it a bit more interesting. when we boosted my lads twiglet we couldn't believe how responsive and revvy it was, think it's around 11.0:1
was more like a bloody strong na than boosted.

Nice, yeah defo would prefer to keep the compression up.. maybe I’ll go somewhere in the middle! Don’t want things getting to hot

i'd just go standard gasket, could always calculate cr if you wanted to see where you should be.

It seems as though bar and plate coolers suffer from heat soak a lot more than tube and fin type Intercoolers... I actually have a bar and plate now, Mishimoto are also bar and plate so not really keen.

Spoke to pro alloy about a custom one so will see
