Interior grab handles

i am sure i have read somewhere that this is a common problem.

on my recent purchase (ph1 172) i have found that there seems to be a dirty film on the interior grab handles, as of yet i am 3/4's way through the passenger one using a white spirit and finger nail method, this is taking ages and i still have to do the other 1/4 and drivers side.....

anybody experienced this problem and know other ways around it?

aye as day said the film is supposed to be there, i have them on mine, but when they get scratched or start to wear they get dirty. i need to do mine i was gonna sand mine down and re spray them

i thought it may spose to be there, but to be honest it looks so much better where i have got rid of it......lol

gark - i have now thought about that as an option really, so no ideas for getting the film off then....

do what jimmer did and take them off, spray them with proper paint and laquer.

Bobs your monkhouse you can just wipe them clean with a chamois.

yep thats the way to do it, but he did still have to pick all the rubber shite of first and he said it too ages to do , spraying them was the easy part he said.

I just bought some new ones Tried sanding them down and spraying them but took ages and got bored.

use GT85 to get the dirt off

i have tried, ag bumper care, white spirit, some swafega (sp) type hand wash stuff, nowt seems to be doing the trick, as you say justin it seems to be a rubber film.

looks like theres no other way around it then

Hair dryer? try warming them up, maybe the adhesive will melt and the rubber will peel off??

but if i can get them stripped and sprayed then it will be better as it is less likey to happen again

with the help of the gf i seem to be most of the way through now, is a dramatic improvement.......

will try the wd40 method on the last little bits, they are a bit stubborn

I have a "peel" everytime I'm stuck in traffic.

I've also started the same method on the steering wheel.

they don't work with wd40 cos they are crap!

try GT85 can get them from halfords

dont paint them unless all the rubber is off as it reacts with the solvent in the paint

You could buy a pair of ph2 handles that have the silver insert as they look alot fresher

i sprayed my old ones, and regrettably traded the car in with them still on! i did my best to do a free swap with someone first but didnt happen.

i got all the old stuff off by soaking in white spirit for a few hours, then using a combination of a briillo pad and a knife to remove it.

Soaking them in the white spirit worked great, i soaked for 2 hours and was easy... but i reckon 4 hours would be perfect!

job done in half a day

Incidentally, how do you get the little 'plug' out to remove them from the door cards?

i used a very fine flat blade screw driver, when i took mine out.

just whip them off and have a bash. i've had mine out of the car for ages, and only just put them back in for the hillclimb meet, as the electrics all work fine, its just a little ghetto using the doorcard to shut the door.

the easier way would be to get some non-RS ones which dont have the nasty coating on.

as said i am literally on the front few cm's of the handles now and then they will be de-coated so i reckon i will be better off taking them off
