Intermittant Electrical Goblins

  Clio 197

Hi everyone...

I was wondering: Do you think that Mobile Phones could be the cause of temporary strange electrical glitches in cars?

Ive not had any in my new car, touch wood, but I have read a lot about things occurring once, only never to happen again (like my wipers in the megane).

Opinions/knowledge please...

Ta,

Oms.

Due to the complexity of the wiring in modern cars one off irreguularities can happen its just down to being to complex.

I work in an Electronics manufacturing environment and know that mobile phones are shielded reasonably well - however they still interfere when the tellys on and when youre on a land line etc so you could be on to something...

Car manufacturers well the one I have had contact with, which happens to be Bentley (bit better build quality than Renault...) assured me that EMC (Electrical interference) was taken very seriously in the electronics of their cars.

But do they test for the interference from a mobile phone?! good question... In this day and age youd hope so!

Plus if they fit dealer handsfree kits which then interfere with your electronics - potentially causing accidents, then they could well be criminally negligent - woops!

I should point out, Im not an electrical engineer, mechanical design engineering is my field so Im sure some electrical guru can shed some more light on the matter.

Mobile phones can produce interference but its not really going to do anymore than make a buzzing noise through your car speakers which is probably the most common...

As to it causing random things to start happening its very unlikey, there isnt a vast ammount of micro-processors on cars and even ECUs dont operate at a very high frequency where interference can start to become a problem!

If you have had a hands free kit bodged into your car then thats more likely to throw a goblin in the works! But thats more likely due to poor instalation! :p
