Intermittant Starting

  1.2 16v clio
Hey Everyone,

Sometimes when starting my car it will turn over and fire first time no problems, but on random occasions it will turn over and not fire at all?! When it first happened I fiddled with the starter motor connection and eventually she started. Took it to the garage and nothing came up on the diasnostic (now lights showed on the dash when it wouldnt start), they have cleaned the starter motor connections for which they didnt charge me. The garage said that if that doesnt work it could be the crankshaft sensor....if this was the case would a light show up on my dash?

Also how much would a crack shaft sensor cost to buy and sit?

Thanks

I don't know if there is a difference in the sensor for a 1.2 and a 1*2 but it could well be this sensor. You don't get any lights on the dash with this and is a common fault with starting problems like this i have found from on here. First i would try locating your sensor (on a 1*2 its above the gearbox to the right of the engine, may well be somewhere else for you) taking it off (2x 10mm bolts iirc) and giving it a good clean with some WD40, it may well be its got some crap on it thats causing it to be hit and miss now and again.

Give that a try and see how you get on.

As for buying a new one again, i am not sure but the genuine new ones also come with a revised loom as i think renault found out they were crappy connections or something. If you were to replace it like for like and not replace the loom(if you even have to in a 1.2) make sure you buy genuine. I've heard a few people say how a none oem one was just as bad as the faulty one.
