lol, thought that was the case, just cover the left hand antenna it drops most signal, it does affect the phone as well, do a speed test covering the antenna the ping will be as long as you hold your hand over the antenna. Will have to wait and see what apple say

Cheers Brad182, look forward to seeing the pics.

What do you make of the bumper so far then?

Thanks!

Its fine mate, tbh I only bought it for a little protection at the time i wasn't aware this would 'fix' the signal problem.

Its far from being worth £25, but what are you going to do. lol.

They only had black, but on the black phone its the best option anyway. Pics up tomrrow mate.

Still waiting for the GFs to be activated from 08:30 this morning...

Can anyone feel their simtray when they are holding the phone? It just doesn't seem to be sitting flush :S It is only very slight!

So is no one else having this signal problem??? or are we all ignoring it for now because of the screen!
When I hold the bottom, and left side it does drop from 5 to 1 bar.

I also tested this on 2 in the store while waiting, and it happened too.

6 months of 3GS ownership and no problem. 12 hours with the 4 and I've lost all sound. Even when I try to play music.... And no it isn't on silent.

It thinks my headphones are plugged in. I have plugged them in and can hear everythin. Unplug and still nothing. When I adjust volume still says it's adjusting headphone volume.

Any ideas?

And it was going so well.

lol there are hundreds of videos on youtube about the flawed antenna design! for example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13nzkL6kQ9Q mine does this also, its impossible to make a call for anytime eally when holding it with your left hand.... epic design fail apple..... Nothing will be done about it of course as its apple... and would require a redesign of the phone.

Ok so the signal thing does not happen when you've got high signal, which may explain how it was missed, at work I get 100% 3G 1000000% of the time, and I couldn't get it to drop for love nor money, where as at home, where its not perfect I can make it drop.

I think we'll all end up changing them in a few months if they resolve it. I know I will be pestering them.

That's a shitter, I'm gad I held back now for the white now, let's hope they don't sweep it under the carpet and spoil a great phone, epic fail though it seems.

Ios4 has also caused problems with loads of connections in cars not working properly now.

Let's hope apple don't become the victim of their own success!

The BBC are sooo stupid! Their articles are rarely accurate! Who write them!?

This article says the iPhone 4 launched on WEDNESDAY:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8759590.stm

This one says the iPhone 4 weighs LESS than the 3GS! IT WEIGHS MORE YOU TW@TS!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8756919.stm

argh, and here I was thinking that 'news' had to be accurate! FFS.

p.s, will be uploading the video of ME being FIRST in to the Westfield Apple store! Had to walk through about 60 Apple enployees and give them high fives etc whilst they applauded me and my mate! They even filmed us coming in as the FIRST customers! Was epic!!!! Queued from about 10:20pm till 7:40am.

Flol at being filmed and applauded, i would feel rather odd tbh :)

was it worth the amount of time queuing?

Mine was :D
yes, was 100% worth it.

Being applauded and filmed and all of them giving high fives etc was amazing! They had a black curtain covering the front of the shop, and it dropped at about 7:30am, with all the Apple employees standing there applauding the queue! Then they let me and my mate in, just us! Was incredible! Queuing 10.5 hours was well worth the wait.

Apple responds over iPhone 4 reception issues: you're holding the phone the wrong way

jobsemail.jpg

So, we just spoke with Apple and got the straight dirt on the reception issues that have been plaguing users today... and it's a little surprising. In essence, Apple cops to the fact there are reception issues with the new iPhone -- namely, that if you cover the bottom-left corner of the phone and bridge the gap between the notch there with your naked flesh, you could see some signal degradation. Yes, you read that right: it's not a software or production issue, simply a matter of the physical location of your hand in regards to the phone's antenna. The company's suggested fix? Move your hand position, or get a case which covers that part of the phone, thus breaking contact. As you can see in the email above which just arrived in our tip box, this is a sentiment which runs pretty high at the company. Here's the official statement:

Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases.

We know what you're thinking, and we're thinking it too: this sounds crazy. Essentially, Apple is saying that the problem is how you hold your phone, and that the solution is to change that habit, or buy one of their cases. Admittedly, this isn't a problem that exists only for the iPhone 4 -- we've seen reports of the same behavior on previous generations (the 3G and 3GS), and there is a running thread about this problem with the Nexus One. While it is definitely true that interference is an unavoidable problem, we can't help feeling like this is really a bit of bad design. If the only answer is to move your hand, why didn't Apple just move the antenna position? What we can say without question is that in our testing of the phone, we had improved reception and fewer dropped calls than we experienced with the last generation, and we never noticed this issue. Additionally, when using a bumper we can't recreate the signal loss. So, now we have an answer... all we're wondering is whether or not the company will start handing out bumpers pro-bono to those who are experiencing problems. It certainly seems like the right thing to do.
