Iphone 8GB or 3G 8 GB the difference?

useless with phones and trading mine in but not sure which i have and have no box.

The iPhone 8GB (2G) will have a brushed silver metal back, the 3G is plastic.

If he cant tell the difference is he going to even know and use the new features on the 4? I don't understand people who buy the iPhone and then just use it to ring people.
