Ipod Help!

My Ipod 20GB will play the songs currently on it, but won't let me update any or take them off?!
This is what happens:

first time I connect to PC - do not discount sign, no response on pc, ipod goes to main menu

second time - found ipod usb drive, do not discount sign, ipod goes to main menu. no response on itunes.
my computer - apple ipod (E: ) empty.

third time - itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipod before it can be used with itunes. you may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the ipod.

click restore and update

the ipod could not be restored. an unknown error occurred (1415)

any ideas to fix or is it truely f**ked and need a new one?

when my ipod used to play silly buggers i used to reset it by pressing the menu button and the select button together for about 8 seconds............have you tried different usb ports or another connection lead
