Ireland - buying car problems?

Apart from obviously having to get there to view the car - are there any problems to buying a car in N.Ireland/Rep of Ireland and bringing the car back to the UK?

Tax/registration/etc?

my boss at work has done this. no problems as you can drive the car on its N.Ire registration whilst its pending change through the DVLA. essentially the same process as changing to/from a private plate. however i believe he also had to have it MOT'd at the same time.
