I'm actually finding the prices getting more reasonable. Still stupidly high, but within a region where I don't cringe everytime I put some in.
My 182 has been pure Tesco 99RON fed for months now and I chucked another £30 in only today. At £1.14.9p, I don't think that is too bad, tbh.
In real world terms I don't think running on 95RON would harm the engine at all. I personally only use 99RON simply because it idles better and feels smoother on the uptake.

Make your own! Acetone, Toluene or Methanol work a treat!
I used to run my 309 GTi on pure Toluene. Went like stink (stank a bit, too) with no problems. I wouldn't advise running a 172/182 on pure Toluene, as it'll cost a hell of a lot more to fix if it goes boom. That and the fact that the old Pug engines are strong as an ox.

I use Tesco pumps as their super is 99ron. For the amount of money you save using 95ron, i think its worth paying that extra couple of quid for super.
But then that depends on how well you look after your motor?

I can understand peoples views on different fuels but realistically when you put it on paper if you fill up with normal unleaded at lets say £1.08 x 50L (11 gallons) litres makes it £54.00 or if you fill it with V-power at lets say £1.14 x 50L (11 gallons) makes it £57.00

Pretty sure it's akin to the E5 we get here in Ireland. 95% petrol 5% ethanol blend giving a supposed 99ron rating.
mine ran horrible on 99ron from tesco, was much more comfortable.

i go down south because all maxol stations petrol is 99ron (5% bioethanol) and only works out at 108p /l !
the benfits like have been stated you will get running 98-99 is that the pick up, idle will be better as there is less preignition. using higer octane fuel it increases the resistance to burn i.e. will fire better and have less missfires and predetonation. Especially as the f4rs are a high reving engine the heat inside the cyclinders can easyly ignite the fuel at high revs.

Ive heard different mate, shell cannot guarantee 99ron every single batch and was tested, turned out to be true! Tesco 99ron was also tested and it showed the best consistency of 99ron throughout every batch - if that makes sense

There is no difference in gains of horse power or mpg.
run the car on what is is mapped to run on and no more!
The difference in octane fuels has nothing to do with the energy stored in the fuel.
The higher a fuels octane the lower the fuels volitility. making it harder to burn. this is suited for an engine where knock is applicable and pinking is regular. If your fuel is pre igniting / detonating then changing to a higher graded octane fuel can reduces or eliminate this. Ie. if you have advanced your timing or turbo charged an engine. obviously in this situation forced induction is cramming so much air and fuel in when the piston compresses the fuel ignites before the spark.
jap imports all have to run on the highest grade fuel.... because they are mapped for 100ron. this is standard fuel in japan. so when all the turbo cars come over here they will knock or pre det if the conditions are right and the fuel is wrong!
the clio doesnt have a forced induction and yes it revs, but not masivey high. mine does not pre det and it isnt mapped on 98 octane. even when im screaming it on the coldest possible day it runs fine and pulls like a train.
higher octane fuel burns slower than lower octane fuels do to prevent detonation. running more octane than you need will cause more engine deposits to form, and that will cause a decrease in engine performance and fuel economy.
High octane offers protection on engines that need it (turbos, nos, superchargers, highly modded engines with high compression) if your clio is seriously modded then run it. otherwise dont.

most of the gains people get in the clio by putting v max or super in is all in the mind.:rasp:

I sometimes run my 172 on 95ron and noticed no difference.
But from when i fir my RS Tuner Grp N Ecu I GUESS IT'LL BE 98-99 RON FROM THEN ON.

Lets leave it with only a week shall we, if your driving 300miles in one go using 95 you will blow a spark plug straight out the top of your engine. Search for the posts or look at some of mine form about a year ago. We are using 98 in our clios to prevent preignition in our short stroke high revving engines not to gain performance!
