is the key decoder ring coded to ecu/uch ?

quick question, in preparation of needing to replace my UCH/Key

is the decoder ring around the barrel coded to the key/uch/ecu? or does it just decode it and feed the info back.

reason i ask is that i thought they were all needed as part of a kit, but i've seen people selling used kits without the decoder ring?

Nope. I don't think it is.

Decoder ring just recieves and moves the signal on.

thanks for that, i dont definatley know if i need to replace it yet, but as said ive seen kits without the 'rings' and didnt want to buy one which is practically useless

Also do the part numbers on the UCH need to match or is it just the N2 N3 etc
