Is this a good deal?

  Clio 182 & Golf Mk1 Racer
Hi, recently registered with this forum as l am looking to buy a nice Clio Sport soon :D

I am pretty close to sealing the deal on an 53' Iceberg Silver 172 FF at my local Renault dealer and wanted to get a few (constructive) opinions from the members on Cliosport before I take the plunge...

Spec:

2003 (53) 172 FF Clio
36,000 miles
FRSH
Iceberg Silver
2 Years waranty
£6500

Just been put through its 36K service with aux belt being done. (I am told by the dealership that cambelt is not required untill the end of the year...)

I have test driven it twice and the engine defintely feels good for the 172 ~ bhp, it drives very nicely and am quite happy with it.

The only querie I had was re a slight knock coming from the rear of the car over bumps. I had a look underneath and put it down to a slightly worn exhaust rubber as I could simulate the knock when pushing the exhaust against the side of the car. I have told them to change that and if all is well, I will buy it...

Is this a good price?

The purpose of this car is something that I can drive daily, do the odd trackday/sprint, and won't need me fixing it all the time - hence buying from a dealer and getting the waranty!

However, I am tempted by a few Clios I have seen (similar spec) that are advertised privately, and obviously for less cash. (5-6K ish)

Is the 2 year waranty worth the extra cash?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Cheers, Ali :)

I'd want the cambelt done at that price. Imo the warranty from the garage is a waste of money.

Not from a Renault dealer its not.

6500 is quite dear tbh. If it was me, i'd want the cambelt, Mats and tank of juice included in that price.

Even though it is an official Renault dealer and not an independant dealer?

Waranty seems to be pretty extensive, covers pretty much everything bar from obvious consumables...

Not so sure I will get them down much more in price. Already been taken down by 1k after I told them they were taking the p*ss...

I had a years warranty with the Renault dealership [Martins Renault Winchester] that i purchased my 172 from, and tbh it wasn't worth the paper it was written on.

Then your a sucker. Should have got onto Renault customer services and complained.

Cambelt is gonna cost you another £300, if they do it, they can aborb alot of that.....hence you save £300 this year, if you can get them to do it then £6.5k is'nt ridiculous and the warranty is almost certainly going to be useful, and as someone has already said, kick off with renault cs if not.

u could have my 182 for that money

Hi - Whats the spec, miles and any pics? Searched your posts but could not find any of your car...

i picked up a 2004 182 for 5700. bit steep if you ask me.

Miles? Was that from a dealer, waranty?

Good point, along the same lines as I was thinking...

Seems abit steep to me to be honest mate, you can get a 182 for around that sort of money

Again, do you mean you could pick up a good 182 for this budget from a dealer with a Renault waranty, or a privately sold 182 with no waranty?

Just to recap, I want to buy the car with a Renault dealer with a 'proper' waranty as from the owners I have spoken to, the opinion is that it is 'worth its weight in gold'. I am currently rebuilding my hillclimb car and so do not have time to be fixing little niggles on my everyday road car, or the cash for that matter!

Fair enough you can get cheaper privately, or from an independant dealer, but as we all know that these two options either do not offer any waranty or do not have a 'proper' waranty - i.e. a token gesture 3 month waranty etc.

Thanks for all of the input so far - very helpful :)

Cheers, Ali

Another Iceberg Silver 172FF in Aberdeen :):D

£6500 is a bit steep, if you don't mind travelling it may be worth trying Ren dealers down south a bit for a 182 for the same price.

The only thing is the warranty might not be the same...

Thats what i've got and my car came from there as well (Evans Halshaw was only FF i could finfd in Aberdeen at time for reasonable price and couldn't be arsed travelling), and my 2 years warranty with them runs out in November and i have only had one issue so far that was covered with no issues.

I had 36,000 miles on my car when i got it from them as well, its now on 50,000 :(

My Aux belt got done as well but the wouldn't entertain changing the Cambelt as it wasn't due (same boat as you)

The knocking may be a rear shock that has gone, as my car was knocking a few weeks ago and it turned out to be my passengers side rear shock absorber, so i sourced two from Evans Halshaw for £105 (wasn't covered by warranty it was classed as wear and tear) and fitted them.

And when your cambelt needs done go to a place in Brechin (about 30miles outside Aberdeen) called Mackie Motors (It a Renault Dealer) and they'll do your cambelt change for a few hundred less than the Evan Halshaw in Aberdeen.

I was 550 quid to get the cam and aux belts changed with a 12 month guarantee on the work aswell ;)

P.s is the car at Evans Halshaw the now ?

Or hidden around the back ?

Tank of juice you'll probably get :)

Mats you may be lucky.

My car was minus mats though when i got it and the said i'd have to pay for them if i wanted them, they couldn't throw them in with car :(

They said "Mate have you seen the price of the mats for these cars (172,182's) ?"

So i just took the mats out my old car (Polo Gti) and have them in my car at moment even though they look odd.

Arsed paying over 50 odd quid for mats from Renault or Just Matz :(

Lol I was pulling his pisser. Sometimes on a car like that you're better with no warranty in exchange for a BIG reduction. If not confident yourself, bung the AA a ton to look it over.

Ali, car looked ok in the flesh when i seen it...Bar tints and a few other bits and pieces...

Sure it's more££, but the warrenty is worth it...Cambelt is a must as i said tho! But it can guarentee now you won't get that.

Check the exhaust tho, it still concerns me a tad.

Agreed :)

And i forgot to say check it has locking wheel nuts under the centre caps, security etching on glass, has an alarm fitted and sometimes stickers on the front windows about the Renault Security Register.

If it don't have any of these, there is a good chance its an imported Clio from Holland, Cyprus etc.

Checked all that Rich!

wasnt from a dealer but was from a trader and has 12 months warranty. 36000 miles.

Must be dodgy! makes it the cheapest 182 in the country.

If you got it for £6k that would be a good price imo providing its a minter.

Dont listen to the muppets on here saying you could get a good 182 etc on here. Most seem to want the moon on a stick. Yes, you'll always find a bargain if you dont mind travelling all over to find it. In my recent search for a RS I found plenty of cheepos but they all had a catch eg aux belt needed doing, loads of dents, poorly looked after, dodgy feeling about the seller etc.

It is a highish price for a 172, but if its a minter and you make sure that warranty is worth the paper its written on go for it.

  Deja vu 182
I d rather pay more for a minter , my 182 s have both been bought from a dealer first one had loads of problems didn t pay a penny for repairs . Second one i drove up and down the country looking at cheaper sheds and then bought one from the closest dealer 54 plate 13000 miles and mint . Bar the odd bargain you get what you pay for.

Succinctly put gav, except for one point , you don't have to go to a dealer to get a minter. You could even get one from one of ''the muppets on here'' lol

Cool cool, just thought i'd mention it ;)

Is it sitting at Evans Halshaw Tullos the now ?

Hi Dicky! You may also know me as 16valver :)

Yeah it is round the back. They are holding it for me.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid for yours?

In your opinion, do you think it is worth paying the premium for a car from them with a warranty rather than a cheaper private sale? Did you find them helpful enough?

  Clio 182 & Golf Mk1 Racer
Hi Ali! Have you tried G.REED cars at Bridge Of Don? They've got some Clios cheaper than that. lol

Dunno if you'd have as much comeback with the warranty etc etc :S

And what kind of warranty would G Reid give you ?

This is it. Heaps of independant dealers, but in my eyes, they do not really offer anything over and above your usual private seller. Their 'warranty's' do not really look very comprehensive and a bit mickey mouse tbh.

No, don't think I have much chance of getting the cambelt done. Possibly get the price down a little if I can prove to them there are cheaper else where, but again, doubt they will shift much.

Hi Mells,

You are probably right. Same as all car forums tbh, the 'enthusiasts' seem to confuse the actual market values with the money they would like to see them priced at.

At £6500 it is reasonably competitive with the waranty. Yes, there are cheaper and there are 182's out there for that money - but that is not what the thread is about! It is to try and find out if this deal is worth it, and all of those other 'cheaper' cars are either from small independent non renault dealers or private sales.

You selling yours?

Tbh, might consider one privately, just not sure how reliable these 1*2's are!

Again, it has to be as hastle free motoring as possible!

Bang on:approve:

I think that (as he said too) If it's a total minter then it's worth about 6k tbh. The price of 6.5k is a bit on the high side, if you got the cambelt change thrown in for the 6.5k price & few other bits then it's not so bad at all.
