Is this too near the edge to fix?

  182 Full Fatt!
Further to my thread about collecting a nail in the rear tyre, here are some pics. Anyone with knowledge on this would be great as the garages are saying I need to replace it! :nono: :dapprove:
I just want it plugged!

Would it not just be safer to buy a new tyre?

Id rateher go with what the garage says than someone from a forum.

Not when you can't get Exaltos anymore because they have been replaced with Exalto 2 and they want £100 each tyre because they need replacing in pairs just before I need all the money for our Trip to Lemans after just shelling out £15K for the Lotus and the £700 for insurance having only bought the Clio 2 months before for £7500 and shelling out another £600 for insurance (getting the picture yet!) :rasp:

And you know the garage only wants to sell me tyres!

  ?
Can you really risk a blowout on the motorway though? Id change it to be safe. No one on here will be able to tell you for definate if it is 100% safe.

I see youre predicament, the simple solution then is to buy a cheaper tyre untill you have returned from youre travels and have enough cash to buy tyre/tyres of your choice.

A £40 tyre is a lot cheaper than having a blowout potentially costing ££££ worth of damage

i had a side wall fixed and it lasted until i got another screw in it which was about 9 months . lol .

if it blew then i would have gone back the garage with a claim against them . simple .

get pre-worn tyres for £30 in notts and there really good as you get a to check them first and if your not happy they change it to a different one until you are happy :)

I would probably ask somewhere to plug it, as I had one in a similar place and they were fine about it. But if you are worried then get a new tyre.

I think it's mostly about arse covering because that area flexes the most at speed. However, if it can run around with a rivet in it without blowing up, it can probably run around with a rubber plug in it without blowing up.

I would think worst case scenario is that a plug would fail and start leaking. I don't buy in to the blow-out argument.

fix it...

if you dont, someone else will

and if your as well off as many of the people on the forum...why not buy another four aswell...hey, its only money..eh

£5 repair and re balancing at the happy tyre man notts
bargain i had one done at the start of the year was a huge puncture near where yours is
and i travel 70miles a day to work and back and its still going strong :)

Forget it no decinet place will fix that its to close to the edge.

I'd change it not worth the risk anyway unless the tyre was near on the center of the tyre.

You've just bought 2 cars, costing £22,500 plus £1300 on insurance and you're worried about spending less than £100 on a new tyre.

Hmmmm.

Dan , Costco have the exaltos in @ £70 fitted and balenced atm. PM my dad to see what he can do too mate :)

  CB600FS
Yeah, thats too close to the edge to be repaired. Any decent tyre place wouldn't repair that.

  CB600FS
Yes it is. But why should they fix it, and if it where to have a blowout they'd get the blame? Just because someone really wanted a garage to sort it, or couldn't afford another tyre.

£81 fitted and balanced at costco not £70, unless there's a special on I don't know about.

new tyre....who cares if u cant get a certain tyre anymore...usually means its been replaced by a better tyre or there is somethign out there just as good

has it actualy puncture the tire or is it just stuck in the tread, you probably allready know this so i apologise for possibly stating the obvious.

  M2 Competition
I wouldnt drive on that, too close to the edge.

£140 for two tyres is nothing compared to what you've spent fella, get some new ones on.

  Mondeo TDCI 130
centre 3/4 of the tyres you can repair in! measure across the tread with a ruler and work it out! looks borderline to me!

No, I am saying that's WHY I can't afford to replace the tyre! Bank account feeling the pinch now!

Hmmm, seems a 50/50 mix. I have had tyres fixed before and they ahve been great, the glues and rubber they use now are hi tech and no I don't spend money just because I have it!

Costco quoted £97 all in fitted for the Tyres James. Just annoyed they didn't have Exaltos in, just Exalto 2s otherwise I'd just change the offending one!

Still just pumping it up every now and then as it does leek slowly! I'll fix it after LeMans!

Costco price for V rated is £81 fitted, its the price I've paid 6 times over 3 years!

W rated are dearer and overkill

Cool! Good price! He quoted W rating. Can you mix ratings OK? I presume it varies the strength of the tyre involved?

How much treads it got on it? If its not a lot just keep pumping it up.

Or, buy 2 Exalto 2's, and keep the other side as a spare? or just sell the one tyre?

No you cant mix speed ratings on an axle, you can get away with it if the axles match (ie w's on the front v's on the rear) but its best not to.

Am sure some sizes exaltos are still available if you shop around, PE2's go for more money so garages want to sell them to you.
