ITB Thread #101 - reliability

only issue i can possibly see is with the raised limiter, apparently the pistons WILL fail with prolongued use over 7200rpm.

gearboxes are fine, dont drive like a bellend and you'll be fine! clutch and driveshafts are fine.

my 172 takes a pounding with probably around 190bhp and the box feels brand new. and my wee dci takes a pounding keeping it in the torque band all day long and its still on original box at 150k miles!

So logic dictates that everything will last longer if abused less. I don't abuse mine - at ~46,000 miles it's on its second set of PE2 fronts, second set of front pads - everything else is original. Apart from the cat which fell apart under warranty :D So on that basis it's logical to asume that, tuned, it might last as long or longer, than a standard car that's been donkey punched from cold every morning for 5 years?

hang on...
this is the guy that moans at the noise he gets when driving at 120mph! which you claimed to do a lot. now im not speed police or anything but im a little confused at the facts.

had the whole lot done, except the bearings themselves.

i thought that freezing went deeper than just the surface though?

the gears aren't worth touching, i think you maybe correct with the freezing going down to molecular level, but the stock selectors will wear no matter what you do to them, we ran thicker steel selectors and they worked a treat, had to use some trendy blue oil though!

Erm, are you following me or something? Please explain how doing 120mph on the autobahn is wearing out the brakes and tyres? Back on topic...

So anyway, from what people are saying, everything should be virtually as reliable as before in terms of pistons, rods, gearbox etc. How robust are the maps in terms of cold/hot starting and such? I guess it's just a case of making sure it's done by a reputable firm :)

From my limited experience with them Roy, you get what you pay for. Back street cheap setup usually results in a lot of problems. Reputable build from people with knowledge of this type of conversion, has a lot less issues.

Sweet. Again, thanks for all the input guys n gals. I think it's safe to think, then, that if done properly, the car will prove as reliable as any 4 year old RS Clio, provided it's treated properly.

Am I right in thinking, based on my research, that the Ktec package is respected and properly tested, and as as good a choice as any? Danke :)

I think GDI have it more refined, and more experience on them on the drive-in-drive out front than Ktec.

Hmm yeah. Thing is, if I do decide I'm definitely keeping the Clio, and pumping it up (it will look sexual dropped c.40mm on H&Rs with black rims against Inferno) so it will most likely be a project for one company to do in one hit, including suspension setup and brakes etc. +48k service and aux-belt. I estimate a cost of ~£7k so it's a big decision, and finding one company to do it all scares me TBH :D
