Its official: Missing the Clio badly :(

Hi guys, as some of you may know, not so long ago I sold the Clio as I wanted something abit more relaxing to drive and something with a turbo....

I Sold this:

And bought this:

Dont get me wrong, its such a nice car to drive from A to B and is quiet and comfortable, but it really isnt anywhere near the 182 in terms of "driving fun".

I may just be feeling sorry for myself as there is a problem with it at the min and is down on power, but just wanted to give my advise to people.

If you are abit fed up of the Clio, and want something more "grown up" and refined, make sure its what you really want, as I am gutted I let it go.

Matt.

what a shame you feel like this, hopefully you will get the Golf fixed and gel with it a bit better.

I sold an Elise years ago and bought a Boxter S and regretted it within days.

Sorry but the RB clio looks stunning!

Thanks mate, I hope so too. Me and Mike (jenic on here) briefly totted up how much I had lost on it in 12 months and it was over £3500 easily lol :(

Wish I had kept in now really. Oh well you live and learn I suppose lol

Know exactly how you feel mate! I went from a mint 172 cup to a 56 plate audi a3 2.0t sline. Lovely car but so dull in comparison to my old cup. I am getting the audi remapped next week to 250bhp / 285lbft. If its still not fun after that its going. What sort of mpg do you get out of interest?

Your clio looked lovely.

I relly know how you are feeling. I sold mine to put towards the deposit on our new house. I would really love another, and i am saving all my little pennies for one.

The forum makes it a million times worse when you see some of the really tidy examples.

Mpg- around town anywhere between 21 to 25, and on motorway about 35 if I drive at 60 lol

I think its the num'ish steering and the smoooth power delivery thats boring. I drove the Mrs's dad's Audi TT 225 a few times and there was no power, no power, no power, then booom all the power, which was quite fun, but on these VAG 2.0T's its too smooth I guess..

Sounds about the same as mine. Thats another thing that bugs me, the performance doesent justify the poor mpg. The 2.0T does seem to refined, was expecting a big surge of power but it feels more like a naturally aspirated and doesnt rev anywhere near as freely as the clio used to. You considered getting it mapped? I will post back after i have had mine done next week and let you know if its anymore fun. Still not going to cure the lifeless steering though unfortunately.

The only thing I will advise you not to do is exactly what I did with a previous car....

Didnt really like it and started modding it to make it brake better, handle better, have more power etc and then £15k later sold it and bought the car I should have bought in the first place.

Petrol heads are destined to lose money, we have just got to try and be a bit sensible about how we lose it :)

Nail on the head - they are too refined. The TT was so different and was fun when all the boost kicked it.

I was considering it until the insurance qtd'd £200 extra for 6 months so its on hold until March ( when I turn 25 )

Yeah be interested to see if the map "wakes it up" lol. Which one you going for, REVO?

TBH when we went to buy another car i realised the Clio wasn't worth alot so kept it for weekends/track days/messing with. + i knew id miss her, even if she is a little rough around the edges, and a bit old. They dont make them like that anymore, all about safety ect.

Nowt stopping you from buying another, great fun IMO.

Thanks for the advise mate, luckily I got it quite abit under book price so I could always sell it and still break even lol

I had exactly the same when i sold my Trophy, I wanted something different as i was a little bored with the clio so sold the Trophy and bought a Megane R26.
Now don't get me wrong the R26 was a awesome car in many ways especially as it was running about 260bhp but it just wasn't as exciting as the Trophy was, I'm back in a clio again, this time a 172 Cup, but again............. I'm getting itchy feet!!

I think we are all destined to get board of the Clio > Sell > Get board again > Buy Clio > Get board etc etc lol

Must say since i've chopped the clio in for the meg i've never looked back, and that was 2 1/2 years ago now. Then again maybe I need to drive one again but I was never as impressed with the clio as I have been with the megane drive fun/experience wise.

Suppose the Meggy has more power/torgue etc than the Golf, also better steering? I've never driven one so cant comment really....

I've bought a clio, got bored, bought something faster, missed the clio, bought a clio, got bored, bought something faster, missed the clio, bought a clio.........

I've done it countless times. They are hard to beat in terms of value for money and driving enjoyment.

Yep, I've always been the same really, I've got a few cars i really want to tick of but when it comes to actually buying them i always choose the safer option of buying something more sensible.
For example, a few cars i want but can't ever seem to go through with getting one....

S2000 - aways wanted one, and still do, driven a couple but the lack of torque really does put me off
Elise 111s/Vx220 turbo - looked at a few when i've been after a new car but can't really put my finger on why i haven't bought one.
Impreza sti ra (V2/3) - the worry of a expensive engine rebuild

and so it goes on!!

Completely agree!

Had a 182 for a year, sold it for a DC2 and an R6, missed it. Sold the DC2 and thought I'll buy an R26. Love it to bits, but the Clio was a lot more fun to own! I would even consider going back to one if it wasn't for the new genration of owners coming through!

The misses had a S2000, great sound but you have to rev the thing to death get anywhere.

Ive had 2 x S2 Elise 111s and an Exige S - they are immense fun in the summer or on a track day but you will soon get annoyed and climbing in and out of the thing.

Im the same with the safer option. Would love an Aston but my pal has had 2. His AMV8 was in the garage more than he had it and I just have not got the balls to go through this.

I live by... German for main car Porsche/BMW/Audi/VW and then a every day/toy ... the reason why I like Renault is that they actually transfer knowledge from motorsport to their cars, the only other company that I can think that does this successfully is Ferrari.

Aint that the truth, why i got rid of my second cup, too many local chavs with them now. However, if i do need to downgrade i will get another, for the money they are very hard to beat. I dont need one for commuting for work, purely as a b road weapon. I'd leave it now though, get a 182 cup/cupped, and keep it 100% standard, just making sure its mint. done.

A friend of mine has a S2000 at the moment and yes it is a great sounding car and they do go very well but it's just such hard work on the roads!

How did you find the Elises? were yours S1's? A friend of mine also has a Elise just a 118 S1 though, i didn't ever really drive this enough to make my mind up, my biggest worry is how forgiving they are, I know it's not the fastest way but on track i really do like to chuck the car about and i've always thought a car like the Elise won't let you drive it that way.

It's a very good point you make about Renault transferring their motorsport knowledge to their roads car, and to be fair they're probably one of the only mainstream manufacturers to still have a strong involvement in motorsport today.

lol, £3500, i'm sure we got the figure a bit higher than that yesterday ;)

The Golf is a really good car, its fast (even in its current state), comfortable, quiet, well made etc etc. Its not as raw and fun and you might miss it when your in the mood for a blast but in reality thats about 10% of the time. The rest of the time the golf suits your needs better, remember those hung over 8am mornings with a yozza decat ;)

  Never above 25mpg
I've had my slower BMW for a week and a half now and there are no Renault Rattles™, nasty bumps, driving's a bit more refined, lots more space and it's a much better driving position as standard!

Only thing I could do with is a 325 engine in the front but I'll live with this for the time being!!

Power from the 172 is an addictive thing but all depends how you'd like it delivered I suppose!

The Golf looks nice, shame you're not enjoying it!
