Hoping you guys can help

Working through the last parts I need to buy to get the Clio finished and out for a test drive - I need a filter for the bodies

I looked at the foam ones (lots of options there) but then I read quite a few people have seen good results with airboxes
After having a long chat to my engine mapper about static and turbulent air and stuff I don't really understand - the airbox seems to be the way to go

I don't really wanna spend £400 on a reverie carbon jobby (as nice as they are) so I found this pipercross one

Trouble is it states only up to 45mm trumpets. mine are 90mm.
I'm sure I read some people on here had got 50mm backing boxes that they cut themselves to mount onto the bodies

Where do they come from? And are there any pre-cut for the clio application as cutting holes in fiberglass to match the bodies isn't my idea of fun

I guess I can buy the back box and get that cut and fitted and then see how much room I've got

50mm deep fibre glass back box - that sounds about right to me
The pipercross airbox is 78mm deep - so 128mm overall and 90mm trumpets should leave 38mm gap

I've heard the foam filters really reduce the power output

The problematic foam filters are the "strap-on" ones and socks wich are not reinforced to keep a clearance to the air horns. A proper backplate filter has some kind of cage in it to prevent the filter from moving towards the intake under load. Advantage of airboxes is a defined cold air feed and not breathing from the engine compartment/radiator area imo.

With the reverie box being 60mm deep I assume you only need a shallow foam filter?

Think I'll have a look what ITG do - I like ITG filters

i read somewhere you should have at least 30mm between the end of your trumpet and your air filter, so i went for the c604d which is the biggest space

also fred said these filter's are pony, but i believe the airbox is a generic fitment so you could just get a different brand... i believe Jenvey even do one

you got me worried then that it wouldn't fit and i'd asked the girlfriend to get the wrong airfilter haha

PH-1 bonnets are shallower on the front that PH-2's iirc

Is it really necessary though - if you need 30-40mm of clearance at the end of the trumpets and they're 90mm
The back box is 60mm - so you only really need a 60mm deep filter. That 604D is 125mm deep

Surely the 602D would be fine?

You could get away with the 2 possibly, I was thinking of taking the pair to track group to see the difference.After running smaller filters for a time you really notice the midrange strangled.

It shouldn't actually matter too much though as from what I could work out ITB's take a lot of there air from actually the sides of the trumpets rather than directly in front - that's why the socks are so bad

The sausage filters all seem the same width wise - just the depth differs

Saying that - I have to say my 90mm trumpets have seen better days and if the 604D fits with the bonnet shut I'm very tempted to chuck 120mm trumpets on and the big filter

You'd still be reducing airflow as theres less volume getting in. Like I say though worth a shout though.You'd need to remove bonnet skin for 120s I think, it's tight.

Hrmm actually I see what you're saying - the deeper the are the more surface area they have so less airflow per inch than the smaller one = better breathing

mine turned up yesterday, looks a good bit of kit, love the fact there's quick release dzus fastener's to take the airfilter off... im a sucker for things like that cant wait to get it fitted

Mainly:
they disrupt airflow at the sides of the trumpet (where the majority of the air comes from)
they filter very little but large stones. Grit, dust and all sorts of other foreign bodies will still go straight into the engine

Quick question - regarding the air coming from the sides
As standard the trumpets are actually touching ever so slightly. Would you recommend filing the edges down to leave a gap between them or is touching fine?

We ran tights once on a throttle bodied race car my mate was building - just basically to go out and do some live mapping
1 mile into it I was stood in the road trying to pull the tights out from the bodies lol - Not a good idea!!

Lol they suck in pretty hard. And some of the caterham racers file down the trumpets, I still don't think it's a good idea... They're designed the way they are for a reason.

Well yes and no - they're designed that way for optimum air flow - but the spacing between the ITB's depends on the inlet manifold which is obviously car specific.
