Judder and banging!

OK - 1000 miles covered in 172 - had a little play drive on the way back from the gym this evening - roads being greasy I decided to test the traction control under acceleration. Is it natural for the car to judder and bang at the front end when the traction control kicks in?.

172s dont have traction control - this seems a common misconception.

The juddering and banging is your wheels scrabbling for traction, each time they bite, the inertia from the moving car causes everything that is not fixed to move and collide and bang against eachother.

Best thing is not to nail your car in the wet.

Actually the 172 DOES have traction control.

It just bugger all once you come on power (over 4500K) in the wet.

And I believe the banging noise is refered to as "Axel Tramp"

Mine did it for the first time last night, it was very wet though.

It sucks really. Only known solution is to take easy in first gear when its wet. I booted mine in the wet yesterday.... sounded like my engine was trying to make its way in to the cabin.... BANG BANG BANG BANG BANG!!!

surely someone has fixed this. i know someone who had loads of stuff done including engine and gearbox mounts and it did dissapear

Actually reckon there are 2 components to this ...

1. Your wheels bouncing ... not sure if its formally axle tramp (is fwd cars drive classed as "live"?) but basically the wheels losing/gaining traction as they scrabble around. Ive had this on various cars when your wheels lose traction and cause the suspension etc. to bounce. No fix beyond good tyres and managing your wheel spin with your right foot.

2. The problem with poor engine mounts and small clearances in the engine bay. This is more typically the bang of the engine hitting the sub-frame. Actually in my case it took form of the manifold hitting heat shields and causing a nasty vibration. Fixed that with new mounts all round. This is a problem that many 172s (and now 182s) have.

Pretty sure it dont m8. It has EBD. I may be wrong, is it on later cars?

Thought ...

- Mk1 - no traction control

- Mk2 - traction control. Early ones werent switchable so always on. Later ones had a switch.
