after a few years of scooby ownership, (3 classics) i am back in a renaultsport clio. just bought this. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2313159.htm and i have to say, i am delighted with it, its a cracking little car, drives superbly, feels like a little go kart, lovely seats, really quick wee car as well. couldnt be happier. so much car for the money, and was showing 33.4mpg on the road back, which is a novelty after subaru ownership. this is my 4th performance clio, owned a mint williams 3 years ago, a brand new white 16v clio back in 1995 and also a brand new clio cup 172 back in 2003, forgot what cracking little cars they are! its good to be back!

Welcome mate .looks like you have your self a tidy example there.what does it feel like coming from a scooby to a 172 performance wise?is there a big difference?

Welcome mate and congrats on finding what sounds like a tidy phase 1!! Probably the best colour you can get for the phase 1 in my opinion! good buy.

What are your initial thoughts compared to the scooby?

my uk turbo was a low mileage pristine example which i modded to 305bhp with a hybrid turbo, andy forrest remap, h&s full decat, ported headers etc, was a very quick car, obviously the power and accelaration was more brutal than the clio, but the clio handles much better being so small feels like a little go kart, think the new shocks and eibachs help in that respect, the interior in the clio believe it or not is also much nicer than the scoob, which was basic to say the least. forgot how much fun a really responsive n/a engine in a small hatch was, had scoobs for the last 4 years or so. im really chuffed with the clio, first time id ever driven one, a ph1 that is, and it certainly hasnt dissapointed. little touches like the alloy gearknob, plus the wheel has been retrimmed so like new. seats sit much lower than the 172 cup did. im thinking maybe a k&n panel filter in the airbox and maybe ported inlet manifolds, and maybe a decat? it already has a stealth cat back stainless on it. oh and the headlights could do with deglazing?? a machine polish to bring them up like new?

on a ph1 your first things to do id say would be match inlets as the non rs inlets are not too great, and then an rs tuner map and decat.

Cant see how the seats any lower as it uses the same set up in all MK2's........... unless the vibration mounts have been removed?

none rs inlets? its a 172 so will have the rs setup as standard... but matched inlets are supposed to make a nice improvement. take it to JMS Tuning for an RS2 inlet manifold!!

Congratulations mate, looks like a classic example of how some high mileage cars can be better than cars with less miles! Did you pay the £2000 asking price?

Very nice. I really miss my ph1 172... the 182 just never felt as focussed. Renew the suspension with standard shocks and you'll be amazed what the car can do!

No fella, there are some inlets with RS stamped on them. They are better cast than a stock set of 172 inlets. Most 182's and lots of 172 Cups have em as standard.

iv just bought a k&n filter for the airbox, thinking about a decat from ktec and their ported inlets, dont really want to go mad with it just help it breathe a bit bitter and free up a few ponies, would be rude not to. so impressed with the handling, no roll at all, just point and go, great fun. still not had a chance to really give it some due to the frosty weather im taking it nice and easy. the wife likes it though so thats a bonus.
