Just driven Williams 0001

the right hand one was written off. It doesnt mean to say that the plaque from the 001 was put on a later model kept in storage and also, wasnt there the williams mk1 phase 1 001 and mk1 phase 2 001 and also international cars that start 001. Surley renault kept one of the early models because they still have all the really old ones.

the one which was written off as reported by the tv journalists was not a production car (according to stuff posted up on here) it simply had the prototype number one.

(this is according so stuff on here) ask stromba for the whole story.

The engine sounded rough on tickover, but this disapeared when the clutch was depressed (any technical guys know why this may be).

clutch release bearing by the sounds of it, my car has exactly the same symptoms, rattley sound at tickover, goes away when the clutch is pressed and there is a bit of pressure on the bearing! Nothing serious tho, more annoying than anything else

The fella on Driven (who was test driving the Williams No. 2), said that Frank Williams owned the original Williams No. 1, and that it was subsequently written off. I must admit, I would expect the original one to be RHD. It is becoming quite a mystery. Cant we make Frank Williams an honourary member, and get him to spill the beans?

King.stromba, you are one lucky man getting to drive the most immaculate williams I ever seen!

0002 is the most immaculate williams ever seen.;)

Yes they are original tyres. Mine also has original rubber on it.

The car written off was the first Williams but not numbered as it was a prototype chassis to test suspension geometry. The first production model (designated 0001) was left hand drive and owned by frank Williams, given as a present from Renault in exchange for the FW14b Forumula one car. 500 Swiss Champion Williams were also built and they too are numbered 1 to 500, however they have different paint schemes and are called swiss champion on the decals of the car (i beleive). All these were for the swiss market, to cash in on the rally craze there and all are left hand drive. However they were made later than the original Williams and so 0001 swiss champion is production number 1 of the Swiss champions but a later production than the original uk williams. So 0001 Swiss champion is probably number 500 + of the production line. In terms of actual numeris production 0001 owned by Frank is the first car of the production line and 0002 is the second (my car which is right hand drive). All the subsequent cars for the english market are numbered 3 onwards and productin in other countries only began once theese were finished (or so i have been told). So if you have a uk car which is numbered that number will represent its actual productin number. A foreigh numbered car will not as it is a subsequent production for other countries, finished after uk productin was concluded.

I know where number 0005 is (Liverpool), but its not confirmed, still trying to get the man. Number 0003 is owned by Bernard Dudot in France.

you can have my willy for a whole day and I only charge £20! No tongues.... please....

Hey cuppy, what about buying the last Willy 3 from that guy that posts on here (its an R reg i beleive). Isnt he doing it up to sell it? Anyone know his name i keep forgetting (soz fella). If he hasnt already sold it, it might be worth looking at if he restores it to full glory.

It was smashed up but if he does a good job i dont think it matters if its been in a crash. Youll get it cheap AND its the last willy produced for UK market. I dont think the damage was that bad. Had only very small amount of miles on it too.

I want his tel no. anyone got it please, Ive already sent a email, but no reply as of yet.

Also how do I know its the last one or not?

  mk1 172

the reason i ask about the tyres is because the original willys came with michelin mxv3 185/55 x 15 rubber but on your pictures they are pirellis.

if this was the real much sought after no.1 why change the rubber after after 21 miles ?

cheers
