Hey guys,

Just a quick thread to say that I recieved my Ph1 172 yesterday, in exchange for my 106 GTi from quik99, and I love it to pieces!
In my eyes its a lot quicker, and feels so good to drive!
Needs a new steering wheel mind :p haha.
Was wondering what easy and effective mods there are?
As with the 106, to gain a bit more power you just wack a Pugsport and 4-2-1 on, easy peasy.

Im guessing its not like that with the 172? :p

Bet your made up mate. I loved the day I got my 172.

As you said though, its not easy to get more power out of them. An exhaust will give you basically nothing but noise. If you want more power then it will cost a fair bit.

:) glad your pleased with it mate!

Just as happy with your Gti.... infact iv just finished a 3 hour detailing session so pics will follows shortly.... its uber shiny!!!!

If you want easy gains, sell it and get something else!

However, the best place for you to start is matched inlets. Your inlest are the worst of the RS range and stand to gain the most from matching. It'll cost you £250 and should get a few ponies.

+1 on the matched inlets. Best power mod for money on these !

Exhaust + de-cat will see the revs rise a little quicker than standard but probably 0.1hp gain ;-) If the standard tube is on there still, get something like a k-tec stealth on there anyway. How Renault made cheese rust so quickly is beyond me

:rasp:

Oh .. where are the PICS ?!

You could have stood a little closer lol

Looks .. er .. like a Clio ;)

Mine were from JamSport in Northampton. They were doing a CS deal at the time, about 18 months ago ?! Not sure who else does them near your end of the world.

exhausts - they rust before they put them on in the factory IIRC

JMS do matched inlet's on an exchange basis, or from time to time people have them up for sale.

Not to sure about K-tech.

K-tec also do matched inlets on an exchange basis. They they are circa £150 or something like that!

personally the best thing you could do to it is a suspension refresh first. change the bottom arms (come with new balljoints and bushes) track rods, track rod ends and probably worth considering the dampers too, especially rears. this will tighten it right back up and make it drive the way it should, they wear out over time and you end up with play in the steering etc.

as for power, ive played about with exhausts etc and their isnt a great deal to be had, gains of upto 10bhp from a 182 exhaust manifold and great mid range torque but its a lot of effort to change.

for the little money it costs id get an RStuner from Henk @ fastchip.nl, his new 98ron map is even better than the old one and made a massive difference to my ph1

its not the full exhaust just the exhaust manifold, it bolts to the engine straight fit however due to the exhaust system on the 172 and 182 being a different size you need a custom link pipe, k-tec racing sell these in decat or sports cat form.

the RStuner is a box that you plug into the car and into your laptop and it lets you upload a new ECU map which you download from their website to your car.

That RStuner sounds pretty good, and at an attractive price!
What kind of experiences have people had with it?

I was going to decat the Clio anyway, as I loved the popping I got from my 106 when decatted, so a 182 manifold could be a decent upgrade!
