Hi all,

was in a car accident about 30mins ago, side impact :( car is mechanically ok. other partys car is cosmetic as well. just wondering if someone can fill me in on what happens next? so far have taken pics of both cars and exchanged details before going our seperate ways. do i call my inssurance now and let them sort it out? do i have to let the police know?

You should report the accident. Phone 101.

Phone your insurer, give them the details. I assume they admitted fault at scene?

thanks, gave them a call and they said no need to report it.

:dapprove: Gutted mate, hope it turns out OK for you.

thanks, car seems to drive all ok. shoulder aches a bit but i think it will be ok by tomorrow.

Call your insurance provider from the scene and they'll take you through everything you need to do...

bit late to do that now lol. will call inssurance when im back home :)

That sucks mate :(
Hope its just cometic and not to serious.
Will have to go through insurance, and then they will have the car inspected somewhere local to report the damage and estimated repair costs.

Whiplash!

Only joking. Unlucky dude, had my first run in with the insurance company this year as well :(

Did they admit fault? verbally or do you have proof? Witnesses? I made the guy who crashed into me sign a bit of paper at the scene

Such a pain. Been though all this recently. Happy to discuss in more detail if you want.

all he said was he was in a car accident and has side damage , why are you all assuming someone crashed into him ? maybe he misjudged and pulled out on someone .... ????

just a thought , the insurers will sort it out , no need to really say any more than that for now .

You do not need to inform the police, however it is useful if they turn up. Their report took 9 months to complete but it was used as proof that the driver who caused my collision a few years ago was at fault. She was also made to choose between a driving improvement course or be charged with dangerous/careless driving. I wouldn't bother informing them afterwards though.

WRONG. They should have phoned police as soon as the accident happened. A police report is what everyone should have after an accident.

This is incorrect. I called 101 and they asked me a few questions like if anyone was hurt, damage to fixed properties (i.e. lamp posts), or if there was oil/debris on the road. as the answer to all of them was no, then the said the police didn't need to know and didn't even take my details.

Anyway, I phone the insurance today and they are sorting it out. I'm not claiming for my car as it appears to be only cosmetic (I will take a closer look next week, but it drives all ok and handling feels fine so I think its all ok). Unfortunately it appears that the insurance have deemed it as my fault due to the fact I pulled out onto him whilst he was overtaking, which is probably correct. Before the flaming starts, I did check my mirrors and didn't see him before pulling out. I think maybe he was the going very fast from the back of the line of cars that I was near the front of, and crept up on me faster than my mind must have anticipated when I looked in my mirror (perhaps I thought he was going to pull in further back the line and thus disregarded him?) Anyway, irrelevant. It was a accident/mistake, my first in 7 years of driving and hopefully my last! All parties were ok and that's the main thing. A5 seems to have come off much worse than the clio for some reason though, not what I expected from German build strength vs French.

Tbh mate, if it is going to go down as your fault you might aswell have your car fixed for free by insurance.
It won't make a difference to the price of insurance if the other guy is claiming damage. You will have an 'at fault' claim and that's all you will be assessed on come renewal time.

Although that's probably true, its viable in this case as the damage is minimal and my excess is £600; I can fix it for £100 to £200. I checked with the insurer, and provided I don't claim for my own car (regardless of the outcome), I wont have to pay anything.
