standard 172s are poo on toast

200 bhp plus fwd is to much

evos look like saxos with doors added

or to many saxos look like evos i cant remember which way round it is

turbo clios fair play if you want to waste your money

but sh*t it must be good fun!
Standard 172s are one of the best and fastest hatches made(there great cars)

200 bhp in front wheel drive is great. The focus RS copes ok

Evos look cool ,saxos are a bit chavy now

I bet you could buy a clio and turbo it for half the money of an evo,and not have to service it every 4k.Infact id go as far as saying you could buy a clio and turbo it for well under 10k

I like sleepers

Well the Focus was developed for its power, the Clio isnt.

On Thursday i saw a Subaru all tarted up and the owner was a 50 year old wearing a Subaru jacket. The rally sl*gs really are so not cool.

My friend used to have a genuine 210 bhp escrt RS turbo a few years back and it flew.I also remember a video on here of a 250 bhp one totally waisting an evo 6 on a motorway slip road a while back

So it does work

the focus rs is good but the power is limited in 1st and 2nd to reduce wheel spin. also the torque steer on them is well bad pulls you over the place.

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

Sorry I like the way Clios drive but Evos are in their own league. After seeing the way Clarkeson took that FQ400 round the track with one finger on the wheel it was incredible. I think they prob handle as well as the GTR Skylines now with the amount of technology they have.

What different variations do they do appart from the FQ400? Is it the 280 and 320?

Also the turbos 172 is at its fully modded potential. A standard Evo is no where near it.

You saw the Evo owner not wanting to lose his licence, and the chav in the RS not caring if youre referring to the "WEVE GOT AN EVO" video on the motorway sliproad!

I have a friend with an Escort RS Turbo running just over 220bhp and my car takes the absolute piss out of it.

A 250bhp RS would do well to keep with an Evo with mild tuning, let alone overtake it.

Frosty - its not worth it. These arguments have gone on for ages and ages.

The only car that suprised me so far was my mates Nova 2.0 16v (non turbo) but I started pulling away at higher speeds.

Evos are special cars, Clios are not. They are good but not special.

Do you know what - I had a little go with a Nova 2.0 the other day and the thing BLOODY FLEW.

I got a crap launch (Im quite careful with my clutch) and i only just started catching him towards the end of second gear.

I think I would have left him in 3rd gear but it was in a 30 zone. When we stopped I shouted over to the guy (above all the noise form his car) "WHAT THE BLOODY HELL HAVE YOU GOT IN THERE?"

His car had 2 seats, perspex windows with sliders instead of winders, 2.0 litre engine, and nothing else. Must have weighed about 700kg max.

The only Nova Ive ever respected.

im not trying to upset people here ,im just saying for a few quid you can have a fast clio that from 30 mph can give a standard evo a scare.

Whats wrong with that....And frosty the evo was doing about 135 before he gave up,and you can have sightly better off chavs in an evo as much as an RS turbo.Someone on here is fitting a TT engine in there clio and then mapping it.Now with 300 ish bhp and a striped out interior do you think you would stand a chance in a straight line from say 30 mph to 120mph ish..I dont

Standard evo 7 does 0-100 in 13 and 60 in 5 secs which is a quick car i agree, but look at what they have had to do to it to get there....all im saying is for half the money you can have just as quick a car with half the running costs

Get over it

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

From experience I know a guy with a Nova 2.0 16v Turbo weighing in at about 800kgs. 265 bhp.

Raced a RWD Sapph Cossie with the same power but alot more weight (another mate) and got beaten. (Sapph won) Santa pod 1/4 mile strip.

What I will say is that Nova was catching the Cossie just as they crossed the line. Yes its very fast but in most cases unusable unless your doing silly speeds.

It is fun sometimes to have these cars but they are a lot less reliable, not built for such a hard life and in the long run will lose so much money it evens out against a more expensive car.

  300bhp MR2 Turbo

I do like the look of J3neds TT Clio as at least that engine is a proven one at that sort of power.

Also built mostly for track use I would guess.

I really dont understand FWD cars wich huge power. It makes little or no sense. Is it really that much harder to have a RWD? cars like the boxster, Clio V6, MR2 etc. are great for two main reasons. Handling is superb because the engine is in the middle and the wheelspin is minimised by having RWD (also better for handling but in drag situation traction is king)

My Evo VI is capable of 60 in 4.4 sec and 100 in 11.2 (Autocar figures which do not lie). VII figures are a little off.

Im all for people modifying their cars, but for me, trying to make a 172 faster than it already goes is like beating a dead horse. What you gain in some areas you lose in others. Torque steer anyone?

With regards to "getting over it" Im not hung up on the fact I didnt turbo my Cup - if I wanted to I would have and Id have a pocket full of change too.

You cannot compare how a Cup drives to how an Evo drives regardless of power, and as a result I am totally happy with my decision. I really want people to get this conversion - I like it, but my point is it will not offer what the Evo does even if it is as fast in a dead straight line.

Laurence (firmly "over it").

well said Laurence,

even if a clio/nova whatever had say 300bhp it may be able to keep up....eventually, after traction/torque steer problems etc have cleared, but as laurence said, it will never give the overall driving experience of an Evo

But thats the whole point...its a Clio. The reason why this kind of argument never gets settled is because there is no right answer. Some people like modding little cars to make them quick and give people a fright, no matter how impractical/silly/expensive/time-consuming it is (A). Other people just buy a fast car or content themselves with a slow car and dream about buying one (B)

Its a black and white issue. Almost everyone on here is either type A or type B, and the two viewpoints are totally opposite. I wont convince anyone whos into buying a new car every three years and worries about depreciation and tax breaks, that THEY should get out the spanners and start modding/tuning. And nor will anyone ever convince ME that it makes sense to spend a hell of a lot of money all in one go, and lose money hand over fist every year, just to have whatever fast car is flavour of the month at the moment.

The very reason why some people think its ridiculous to tune a Clio to 200+bhp - i.e. because its just a Clio and its front wheel drive - is exactly the reason WHY I did it... To show that it can be done, regardless of how silly an idea it might be.

Its like the V6 advert that Renault had in the press recently with two columns, for and against or something like that, with the same attributes in both columns - i.e. no room for kids, eye-catching, etc. That really sums it up, whats good to some people is bad for others.

go the sapph cossie;)

well said nick.

Each to there own. Everybody spend their money on what they want. Some people like nick just like surprising people. When youve just spent a big lump of cash on an Evo and some little clio is keeping up with you, thats the fun part of it. Nick must get a real sense of achievement from scaring fast car owners, and its something hes built himself.

I really want to build a clio, mini or something and make it RWD just to spin the wheels somewhere and see peoples surprise thats its RWD. That surprise is what makes it fun.

Mark

Ive had wheelspin in 1-3rd gears in the megane.

225bhp through the front tyres is just insane - you should see what happens if you welly it through a roundabout....totally lose traction in the front end

my mate at work had a focus RS with 251bhp and that handled well if your were sensible like not booting it in a corner with only 1 hand on the wheel

  20VT Clio & 9-5 HOT

the face of the classic import sti driver (250bhp) on saturday was an absolute picture!! He was sat an inch off my ass (on track), then proceded to overtake once we hit the open straight, in which case i gave chase, caught up and past slowly but comfortably, and i was 1 up with a car full of tools, jack, etc. the look on the guys face still makes me chuckle!

im not saying clio is a better car cos I know it isnt, but its a bloody good laugh when the last thing they expect is a clio giving them a spanking! especially with 1.2 badges on the side! ;)

when im older and richer, i will no doubt have better cars, but at the mo i cant really afford anything much more than a clio due to how long its been since i left uni. untill then its all good fun!

ill post a video up later of a nova absolutely spanking a saph cos even tho the cossie it well infront by the 1/8th mile!

and how can anyone say running 12/13 second 1/4s in a FWD car is unusable power? there is more to getting the power down than having your foot to the floor through every gear! Just cos a FWD car has 250bhp and weighs under a ton doesnt mean that you have to be 100% balls out when ur accellerating hard! the accellerator is a wonderfull thing! the power is all dependant on how hard you push it! ;)
