Key completely dead - Clio 172 Ph1

Only thing I can think is the lack of power to both the car and the key being flat for so long, it's lost its coding? But for the central locking only, as you've used the key to start it so the immobiliser recognises the key, otherwise it wouldn't of started

Now, If that has happened to it, would the key still light up? I would have thought that the key would still light up when pressed despite not being coded to a car. I might be wrong but that’s what I would expect to happen.

I’m completely stumped on what to do with it if the key guy can’t fix it. Might be worth seeing if I can get a new key coded for less than Renault will charge.

I lost coding to both sets of my keys randomly and had to get Renault to sort them out.

Car started and ran fine I just couldn’t lock it easily which was handy on the return home from a Euro trip.

I was quoted £110 for a new key the other month up in Aberdeen, gives you a rough cost

I was quoted £160 for a new key and an extra £120 for Renault to code it to the car. They need it on site too which I can’t do as it’s in bits awaiting me to do its timing belt.

I don’t recall pal, it was 15 years ago. All I remember was I parked up in Belgium to get something to eat locked the car fine, when I came to return to it I couldn’t get in via the fob. Managed to get through the passenger door and tried my spare key which I had brought with me and that one wouldn’t work either. Both keys had immediately stopped working even with trying fresh batteries in them.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the same has happened with mine then, sounds like the same kind of issue. I wouldn’t mind too much if they passengers door locked manually but I’d rather have central locking so I’ll fix that first.

Yeah the key should still light up when pressed. If it doesn't it would suggest a lack of power to the key, or the microswitch.

What I don't know is how the immobiliser ring works on the ignition. Does that require the key to be powered so it transmits it's "code" so the car starts, or does the ring on the ignition power the immobiliser chip in the key via inductance when the key is near to it like an NFC chip kind of thing

I thought that’s would be the case with the light.

Someone with much more knowledge on Clio immobiliser systems might be able to answer your question. I’ve not got a clue. It might be worth just getting a new key at this point.

I’m definitely not paying Renault prices. Seems to be quite expensive for anything involving them even crank pulley was £360.
