Kitcar running trouble

I've just got it today after having some work done. Above 4krpm on full or highish throttle it just misses and stutters. If i go through the rev range on mid to low throttle it will go happily to 7krpm.

At the moment the filter for the weber 45's is touching the inside of the bonnet. I think this is restricting air flow on full throttle thus making it struggle.

Could this be it. Will run it with out the bonnet tomorrow to make a comparison.

Can't be sure stan. If the bonnet thing doesn't help i'll take to to a specialist and have the carbs set up.

the end of the trumpets are only about 4mm away from the side though.

so has it got filters or not??

by what your describing, the filters are squashed between the trumpets and the bonnet?

You may have to cut the bonnet to give clearance if this is the case.

Yeah the filter is trapped between the ftrumpet and the bonnet.

lol so its not a case of lack of room....more a case of full-on suffocation!!

yup defo sounds like u need to cut the bonnet.

Hmmm like i said i'll take it out with out the bonnet on tomorrow. If it still struggles i'll take it to a carb specialist. How much would that cost roughly.

Do you have filter socks and a pair of bolt on filters?

And did it do this before at any point, or have you only just done something to the air filter setup/bonnet?

God knows....depends how much it needs setting up really.

What engine&spec is it out of intrest? What ignition control are you using?

Just a standard toyota 4age 1600 with weber 45's on it. I don't know the spec yet as i only picked it up tonight. It recently has had a new bonnet though. From the old pics of ot the last one had a cut out in it.

I got it then it went straight in for an LSD and 4 pots. So it hasn't been driven till today.

right

Take the bonnet and filters off then go for a quick drive and see if it makes a diff.

Just not down a dirt lane.

If it doesn't. Whats it most likely to be. Fueling problems or sparking problems.

youve confused the hell out of me lol. at first it sounded like you had bolt on rigid filters....in which case it wont matter if the body is touching the bonnet....then you said they were squasehed...implying socks!!

so it is a rigid filter....i would defo say there is a problem elsewhere.

not really...will likely be a simple fuelling/ign problem.

Just check both systems for obvious faults, and maybe fone round a few local places offering crypton tuning....you will probably find an 'old boy' who will know his way round a set of webbers. or try a proper tuning place.

could be a coil, could be a blocked main jet, could be your air filters..........doesnt have to be expensive.

Just get someone to look at it.

if i look out of my window i can see a old skool garage offering crypton tuning. Always wondered what it meant!

Test with no bonnet on is the quickest way to see if its that which is the prob.

Then simple one of checking the main electronics, leads, etc, then AFR etc. Should be easy to sort out bud.

they are usually run by a fat bloke with a flat cap, wearing blue (or green often) overalls which are both too tight, and too short.
