Knock knock, who's there?!

  Clio 182
Strange one here for you, that's confused even the technical of mechanics, so over to you magnificent people.

The car

2005 Clio 182, 81k miles, full service and well maintained

The query

Knocking noise coming from the front near side (passenger) side wheel/wheel arch area. It's been to two garages for diagnostics, but despite lots of money later, nothing has been diagnosed as the problem. It does it, generally, at low speed (gears 1 or 2) and when turning. There's no rhyme or reason, as the noise is really intermittent.

Possible solutions

Between two garages and five mechanics, the possible solutions include:

1. Drive shaft gator
2. Subframe
3. Driveshaft
4. Steering rack
5. Track rod end

Have you heard of anything similar happening to this model? And if so, what fixed the problem?

Any help would be fantastic as I can't afford anymore investigatory work!!

Thanks for the speedy reply, I've had the top strut mounting replaced as it was knackered. Is that the same?

Shaun, that's identical. Generally only does it in low gears too. Will check joints this weekend. Thanks!

If it happens under slight accel/ braking it could also be gearbox mount. Common issue again but the top mount washers are cheap to try first and also occur whilst wheel turned.

Same problem with mine, fitted the washers and it wasn't as bad. Sounds weird but check your arch liners, after I fitted mine with the new plastic plugs the noise wasn't there anymore
