Knocking/Creaking noise when travelling slow. Any ideas?

  Clio 1.2 Grande (2001)
As title says really.

Over the last 500 miles or so I've been hearing a kind of knocking/creaking noise coming from most probably the front right hand side when travelling slowly. I can't quite pin it down to when it's going over bumps or turning or what?!

Could it be the shock seizing up?
Or top mounts going maybe?

Anyone any ideas? MOT is due in Sept and am dreading it.

Hmm, thought it could be something like that. Any quick way to check? I was just about to get it up on stands and have a poke about

I just jacked it up and I can turn the wheels from lock to lock without any clunking from the top mounts. They seem solid enough. I pushed the car down at the front and the creaking seems to be coming from the front shock but after a good few bounces it kind of went away. I wonder if it's got a leak and started to dry out? Maybe I should replace them?
