Knocking noise

I have an 02 1.5 diesel Expression

Went for MOT, got an advisory about too much play in the steering column

Its now making a knocking noise when holding a constant speed, garage said that there is too much play in the joint at the end of the steering column.

Any ideas on the validity of this ? and is it fixable without getting a new column?

I seem to remember being able to adjust the amount of play on the steering, I did it on my brothers 1.2 a while back. Ill have a look and let you know.
