Knocking sound from nearside front when braking

  ph1 172
Just developed this over the last 2 weeks.

Basically when coming to a junction/stop if I pump the brake pedal on/off it knocks everytime. If I'm gentle on the pedal and smoothly depress it doesn't.

I've removed my ns strut and checked the top mount and they seemed worn (60k) so replaced these tonight. Still does it but drives lovely with the new mounts:approve:

Initially I thought it was brake related and I had some DS2000's waiting to go on. So I stripped them. There was one slider seized each side. I freed them off and lubed and made sure the piston were moving freely, they were. Still knocking.

I've visually inspected the gearbox mount as I've uprated it and I've read of the nut coming loose. Looks good.

Sound familiar to anyone? any suggestions appretiated.

Ball Joint. Jack it up and grab the wheel, yank it about and see it there's any movement.

100% agree with the above, but also, check the two bolts that bolt the balljoint to the lower wishbone, one of two things could have happened:

1) They've come loose

2) Someone's used a 10mm balljoint when it's a 12mm, eventually these work loose and knock.

Other than these two, if it's balljoint related it'll be noticeable by doing the above.

Cheers boys. I think this is the problem after reading above.

I replaced the ball joints in December with eurocarparts items. Half way through the job I realised they'd gave me a 10mm and a 12mm. So I drilled the 10mm out.

Would you recommend Renault ball joints? or will the correct 12mm one from eurocarparts be ok as the otherside has been fine?

Aye - just get the right size... BUT, if it's oval'd the hole, it's replacement hub assembly time (if it's andthing like the Peugeots).

Aye - 306's known for it... if the pinch bolt loses it's grip, the ball joint rod starts to move in the shaft and knockety knock knock. Hub carrier replacement needed.

Done a couple myself - not the hardest of jobs.

Still need help on this please.

I've fitted a new ball joint today and the knocking is still there. It seems to be knocking a little less now though.

As mentioned above could this be wear in the actual hub?

I've found a second hand 172 cup hub for £15. Just the seller isn't a 100% on it being off a cup.

Does anyone know how to tell it is?measurements etc.? before I commit to buying.

Thanks
