Knocking

Right, been getting some clunking/knocking when going round a bend at full lock at very slow speeds i.e. 5-10MPH. It doesnt happen all the time, very rarely in fact and the noise is only coming from the nearside rear wheel.

During MOT, spoke to fella who said that the knocking was coming from that tyre having been punctured and repaired and the knocking was coming from the tyre.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/badinvinciblepics/Picture002.jpgPicture of said tyre. As you can see, something is rubbing against the inside of the tyre and has left a worn out "ring" along the inner sidewall of the tyre.

Jacked up the car, changed the wheel for the spare and had a wee fiddle.

When you turn the wheel, nothing seems to catch the tyre although there is a plastic guard that is very close to the tyre.

Have a look - http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/badinvinciblepics/Picture003.jpgPic1 http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/badinvinciblepics/Picture005.jpgPic2 http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y279/badinvinciblepics/Picture008.jpgPic3

Knocking still persists but the spare has shown no signs of the "scoring" from the previous pictures.

Any ideas?

Id get someone to get it up on a ramp and take a proper look and give a yank on parts or get a pry bar between them. Knocking suggests a suspension component or mount being heavily worn or broken. If it was just a misaingned liner it would probably just make a scrubbing noise. Sounds like something is moving about hence the knocking and result of the wheel moving and the tyre rubbing against something. Maybe a problem with the trailing arm on that side.

Depends how worn it is or if its broken. It might be fine and not cause and problems. On the other hand it could cause an accident if it gives way or moves more than it should. If it causes the wheel to foul and burst the tyre or jam the wheel against the arch and lock it up things could be messy. Id personally take it somewhere sooner rather than later.
