I did a Porsche experience day at Silverstone earlier this year, and was gutted we weren't allowed in the car with the instructors (we had a car each and had radios so he could talk to me).

If I ever went to the Nordschleife I wouldn't even bother taking my car around. All my money would be going towards as many taxi laps as possible. You could drive anything you liked, you would never come close to belting around the Nordschleife as quickly as they do in their GT3RS'es, AMG GT-Rs etc.

I did the v10 m5 ring lap with 2 mates and Sabine. We drifted literally f**king EVERYWHERE and I was hanging my head out the back window ready to barf (shockingly bad as a passenger! 😂). But she kept her foot in and was laughing at me trying to throw up lol! Went sub 8 with Sabine.

Watched this the other night too. I rreally like the Apex guys and watching Robert around there was superb.
Im a Porsche fanboy and we can all bang on about GT3s and the like, but the way the BMW M cars cope with the useage there is really impressive.
Apart from being on a board in the mountains, being at the Ring is my favourite place on earth

The last two visits of mine I've not driven it at all and only done taxi laps. It's a whole different experience and is worth every single penny!

Been out with Dale Lomas in the M3, and a couple of times with Apex in an M5 and supercharged E92. Quite funny standing in the car park and seeing quite a few get out with full sick bags lol

Spose it depends what you class as fast. I personally probably couldn't do a sub 10 minute, so a sub 8 in a taxi to me seems fuckin quick!

Most Taxi laps with multiple people in are around the low 8 min mark. That’s quick to those not familiar with the track or the speed available there. However seasoned drivers there with reasonable but not outrageous equipment are around 7:30 pretty regularly.

I don’t care who you are, if you’re driving there and lapping in less than 9min, you’re not hanging around.

I’ve done a decent number of laps there driving and probably half again as a passenger.
I’ve been driving there since 2005 and still won’t put a stopwatch on in my car.

If you think you’re that much of a hero at driving then you’re f**king deluded.

I agree in part with what Rob is saying. The Ring Taxi drivers can't take big risks just to impress you. It's their job to show you a quick but safe lap. They regularly get overtaken by the locals who can push without worrying about having paying customers onboard.

Kubica's lap looks good, especially from a normal-ish M4.

We did the taxi lap in M3 with Dale
Had to stop half way round for a 5 or 6 car pile up so it ruined the 'time'

The Mrs went in with another driver and got a clean lap and was just over 8 mins.

Great experiences the ring taxi was.

The example I remember was a 6:50 with time left on the table for cautiousness. Was just after a track closure so they had a fairly clear run. I think the more normal times for the GT2RS are low to mid 7s.

Of course with traffic they’ll be slower but they’ll still be way quicker than any wannabe hero who rocks up reckoning they’re going to go straight into doing sub-8s.

There may be locals in full blown race cars with 200 laps under their belt going faster but they are few and far between.

You are not going to take a trip to the Nordschleife and straight away, f**k it, even with a week’s worth of laps, be quicker than a vastly more experienced racing driver in literally the fastest production car ever to lap the ‘Ring, which they also know like the back of their hand.

It does make your opinion less valid, yes. We're not talking about lap records or British guys descending upon the 'Ring for the first time. There are lots of people during the summer months doing very quick laps of the circuit in some pretty potent cars, many of which are overtaking Ring Taxi's and suchlike. Anyone who's been will know that the place is full of very fast drivers who know what they're doing.

I did sub 9:40 laps in my standard Swift on road brakes and tyres, on a really busy bank holiday with lots of traffic. I've been 8:40 in a 172 with a local German behind the wheel. One of my mates did 8:11 in his supercharged DC2, all the above are BTG of course.

I think unless you are a formula one driver everyone's driving and opinions are slighty different.

Different drivers in different cars will have different lines. All depends on the car really. Aero, mechanical grip and braking performance will all be a factor.

Trackday instructors are mostly there to tell you the safest line and to get you driving smoothly. This usually makes you quicker if before you were say erratic with the steering.

Majority of taxis are driven at 70-80% and I still stand by my comment. If you’ve been in a car giving 90% you’ll feel and know the difference. That’s all I’m saying.

It’s pure business, they minimise running costs and maximise profits.

you're only a real man when you've been to the ring and nailed a case of german lager on the track side, after a lap or 2 - regardless of times.
