Seen as CS knows all is it a case of re-lacquer panels affected or is it a re-paint job? Im guessing its a lot cheaper to have just re-lacquer. Panels in question are bonnet and roof

are you a sprayer? surely it could be rub back lacquer, coat of paint then lacquer? Not that I know just thought that would be worst case

yeah im a sprayer.

a lot of people think that bodywork is simple, that its just a case of putting filler in a dent, rubbing it down and painting it. job done.

to get a factory+ finish you need to do the prepwork properly.

if youre laquers peeling, then no doubt it will peel even more when they try feather it back in.

has the bonnet/roof been painted recently? is it peeling due to stone chips? pics would help.

if you just put basecoat (colour) straight onto an area thats been wetsanded back (feathered in), it will ring up. you will see the line of the old laquer in the basecoat and the line of the old basecoat in the basecoat too. needs to be primered to get it all level again

i think its sun damage to be honest. Theres a couple of patches the size of small plates. I understand what your saying about the old and new lacquer mixing will prob cause problems in the future, but what if was to do the whole roof?

I learnt the hard way^^

Had a bit of lacquer peel myself so flatted it all back and went over with panel wipe, then when I went to lacquer back over the paint just picked up over the lines where the lacquer had peeled in the first place.

The reason why you're lacquer has peeled in the first place is because of poor primering from a paint job it must have had in the past. Until you correct this, by starting from scratch, any re-applied paint is just going to react and not settle properly, so it'll have to be a respray.

Couldn't all the laquer be sanded off and just basecoat then laquer? Or is that too simple? I'm no sprayer so just wondering!

nah, youd have to sand it all perfectly, all over, with wetordry and not break through the basecoat once. just aint realistic.

personally id just get a sander on it with some p320, sand it all back so it aint peeling, then prime the areas i went through, basecoat then laquer

its ussually between £150 to £200 a panel depending where you go and who they are. also dont be temped by a really cheap price. the chances are that they will do a crap job and use crap materials and it will end up looking the same as it does now if not worse in 18 - 24 months time.
