Ok we currently have a wired network between 3 PCs and sharing the broadband connection from the main PC downstairs. I'm looking at getting rid of my PC and getting a laptop instead. Is it possible to run a wireless network and a wired network in conjunction?

wireless router...you can still plug cat5s into it :/

well you need a wireless router with wired LAN ports as well.

hence you will have 2 PC's plugged into the router and the laptop will connect to the router via the wireless feature on your laptop

Are your three computers using a router currently (all connect to a box), if they are just think it being the same but the router being able to work wireless as well.
