Launching the V6

  Clio V6 255 (Acid Yellow)

Ive recently bought a V6 255.

This is the first rear wheel drive car that Ive owned.

Last night I was demonstrating how good the traction is off the line by trying a launch at 5,000rpm. Now Im used to progressively taking my foot off the clutch to get the fastest progress, but I believe that this caused my clutch to slip resulting in a cabin full of smoke and me moving forward at a snails pace!

Ive discussed this with a mate and he thinks that in a rear wheel drive car you have to be brutal and literally side step the clutch at the given revs. Is he right??!! - I dont want to test his theory and end up needing a new gearbox!!

3k mate id say, im just getting used to my mid mount rear wheel drive car, cos the turbo kicks in early enough you wont get bogged down, trial and error though to get it perfect.

^^ yup about 3k, wait an instant for the clutch to bite and then floor it. Ive tried higher revs at Santa Pod and it just resulted in the old smokey cabin and going nowhere routine.

Launching a normal rwd car and the v6 are two totally different things. Because the v6 has so much traction all the pain goes through the clutch.

You just have to be sensible and not cook the clutch. When I give my mk1 Escort some from a standing start I can just merrily fishtail down the road with the rear tyres smoking away taking all the grief.

Slipping the clutch at 5000rpm in the Clio will result in a toasted clutch and smelly clothes.

  Forester Sti, SC Clio V6,

The V6 has no LSD and loads of traction, 3500ish rpm clutch up smoothly and quickly then WOT - anymore than this in my experience is both smelly and embaressing, bit like sh*tting in the drivers seat reallly!
